At around 05:00 in the morning, naval vessels from both sides left the dock one after another, and then formed a mixed formation and sailed to the mission sea area. The ships of both sides established communication links and informed each other of information elements such as the hydrological and meteorological conditions, and the sea and air conditions in the mission area.

In the drill, formations of mixed Chinese and Russian naval vessels will conduct submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine operation, air and missile defense and maritime combat.

"Previously, the Chinese and Russian naval forces formed a joint command headquarters and organized map simulations based on the exercise plan and drill program. We conducted in-depth discussions on issues such as organizational form and force coordination, and revised and improved the exercise course plan and safety plan. At the same time, we conducted professional exchanges on projects such as underwater attack and defense, and submarine rescue," said Wang Xuchu, a commander of the Chinese naval fleet.

The China-Russia joint military exercise is taking place in the waters and airspace near Vladivostok from Aug 1 to 5, under the themes of "jointly safeguarding strategic maritime routes" and "jointly countering security threats in the Western Pacific".

Captain Alexey Antsiferov, a commander of the Russian naval fleet, said the themes mark traditions that China and Russia have maintained for many years, and also let the countries surrounding the Western Pacific know that such a joint force can provide them with more help whenever in need.

"I have met your captain and formation commander, the first step in communication, which is very important for both of us. Only by understanding each other can we better understand our joint operations, get to know what will happen, and what missions we will carry out," said the Russian commander.

As the exercises gradually matured over the years, the joint command center has become an important bridge for deepening communication and cooperation, where the two sides jointly inspect weapon platforms, conduct professional seminars, revise and improve plans, and command coordinated operations of maritime forces.

Following the conclusion of the current joint exercise, some participating forces from both sides will proceed to relevant areas of the Pacific Ocean for the sixth joint maritime patrol.
