China has led the formulation of hundreds of international standards during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), which helped related industries to enhance their international competitiveness, said an official in Beijing on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference, officials from the country's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) briefed the media on the progress that China has achieved in industrialization during the Five-Year Plan period.

Xiao Han, director of the SAMR's Standard Innovation Department, said that the international standards, with China playing a leading part in their formulation, have provide reliable guarantees for Chinese products like high-end equipment, key components, and large-scale integrated systems to qualify for the international market.

"In key areas such as high-end equipment and intelligent manufacturing, China newly have taken on secretariat positions in 26 technical institutions of the International Organization for Standardization. Meanwhile, Chinese experts have newly served as chairpersons of 30 technical bodies. China has put forward 880 new proposals and led the formulation of 532 international standards in fields such as new energy vehicles, advanced power systems and aerospace," said Xiao.

As China is actively promoting the compatibility of domestic and international standard systems, 4,210 advanced and applicable international standards have been converted into China's national standards, with the conversion rate in key areas exceeding 90 percent.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern over the latest escalation in the Middle East, his spokesman said on Thursday.

Guterres is deeply concerned by the continuing escalation in the Middle East, including the strikes by the United States on Iran and the strikes by Iran on neighboring countries in the Gulf and beyond, and a significant increase in hostile rhetoric, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

"He (Guterres) urges the parties to return to the full implementation of the ceasefire, to avoid any further deterioration, which, as he told the Security Council yesterday (Wednesday), could trigger a full resumption of the conflict, with unpredictable consequences for the region and the world, especially for those in the most vulnerable countries," said Dujarric.

The secretary-general reiterates that the only way forward is through genuine dialogue and negotiations. He calls on the United States and Iran to redouble their efforts toward a peaceful, comprehensive and durable agreement that advances regional and international peace and security, said the spokesman.
