China will host the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Beijing later this year, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, emphasizing the country's continued dedication to advancing women's rights.
Lin made the statement in response to a media query about a high-level commemorative event held during the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing.
"On September 8, a high-level commemorative event for 'Beijing+30' was held during the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. The Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Thirty years ago, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which remain guiding documents for the global development of women's causes to this day," said Lin.
"In the second half of this year, China will host the Global Summit of Women in Beijing. Leveraging the 'Beijing+30' momentum, the summit seeks to accelerate a new phase in women's all-round development, advocate for true multilateralism among all parties, and harness development to safeguard and advance women's rights. Participants of the commemorative event spoke highly of the milestone significance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and expressed anticipation for reconvening in Beijing to jointly enhance global governance on women's issues," he said.
