The new-term Legislative Assembly members must uphold the principle of "patriots administering Macao," said Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government Sam Hou Fai.
In response to a media query at a polling station of the election for the eighth Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR on Sunday, Sam said this was the first election held under the newly amended Legislative Assembly Election Law to further implement the principle of "patriots administering Macao."
"As an important part of the governing team, members of the Legislative Assembly must uphold the principle of 'patriots administering Macao' and demonstrate their love for both the motherland and Macao. The new-term legislators therefore shoulder significant political responsibilities, legal obligations, and duties as elected representatives," said Sam.
Voting started at 09:00 and concluded at 21:00 Sunday local time. The initial counting of the votes was completed early Monday morning.
The new legislature of the Macao SAR comprises 33 members, including 14 directly elected members, 12 indirectly elected members, and seven members appointed by the Macao SAR chief executive.
The chief executive will designate those appointed within 15 days of receiving the final election results.
The Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR is the region's legislative body, and its members are permanent residents of the SAR. Except for the first term, which was stipulated otherwise, each term lasts four years.
In 2024, the Macao SAR amended its Legislative Assembly Election Law, improving the candidate qualification review process to implement further the principle of "patriots administering Macao" within the legal framework, while also refining stages of the election process to ensure that the election is conducted in a fair, just, clean, and orderly manner.
