Cuban president condemns US blockade as imperialist policy

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel vowed Cuba "will never succumb" to decades of U.S. blockade and sanctions, condemning Washington’s policy as imperialist in an interview with China Media Group (CMG) aired Friday.

He said the United States has long misunderstood Cuba’s ability to uphold sovereignty and pursue progress, attributing the blockade to a persistent belief in the universality of American values and a discomfort with nations that chart independent paths.

"I often think about why the United States has been implementing a blockade policy with racial undertones against Cuba over the years, and the only answer I can find is: First of all, the U.S. government is so arrogant that it can't accept the fact that its values are not universal for the whole world, and it can't clearly understand that some nations, even if they are weak, would rather die than submit themselves. They are unwilling to be colonized again or lose independence and sovereignty. And they have the ability to confront an empire because they have thoughts," said Diaz-Canel.

"Second, what makes the United States uneasy is the example set by Cuba. Amid 65 years of U.S. blockade, Cuba has still achieved many social accomplishments. No matter what unilateral coercive measures the United States implements, what extreme pressure policies it pursues, or how intense blockade it imposes, they will never be able to make us succumb," said the Cuban president.

Diaz-Canel was in China earlier this month for commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
