Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Monday called for joint efforts in promoting innovation in engineering science and technology.
Ding, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when addressing the opening ceremony of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) 2025 General Assembly and Global Engineering Congress in Shanghai.
Ding said joint efforts are essential to drive progress and innovation in engineering science and technology, so as to improve the wellbeing of people around the world.
He then put forward a four-point proposal.
He called for stronger open cooperation to jointly build a global partnership in engineering science and technology.
He stressed the need to make breakthroughs in cutting-edge technologies, with the focus on green development, food security, energy revolution and other key fields, and work together for scientific and technological solutions to global challenges.
Ding called for sharing in development achievements and implementing the Belt and Road Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation Action Plan. He underscored efforts to bolster collaborative governance, jointly implement the Global Governance Initiative, and foster an enabling environment for the development of engineering science and technology, he said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a congratulatory message to the ceremony.
Also addressing the ceremony were Chen Jining, secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology, and WFEO President Mustafa Shehu.
Themed "Engineering Shapes a Green Future", the event takes places from Oct 12 to 17. It aims to share China's engineering achievements and experiences while facilitating in-depth cooperation and communication within the international engineering community.
