China has been firmly supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people while upholding fairness and justice, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

Guo's remarks came after he was asked for comments on the International Court of Justice affirming on Wednesday that Israel, as an occupying power, is obligated to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, including assistance provided by United Nations agencies.

"The International Court of Justice has issued an advisory opinion on the case concerning humanitarian aid for Palestine. It explicitly determined that Israel has an obligation to cooperate with the UN and its agencies to ensure that the occupied Palestinian territory receives humanitarian assistance, which responded to the widespread concerns and expectations of the international community. As a responsible major country, China has actively participated in the court's proceedings, submitted a written statement and appeared before the court to make an oral statement, and comprehensively elaborated the position on important issues of international law. These positions have been fully reflected in the advisory opinion issued by the court. We will continue to engage constructively in international legal affairs, take concrete actions to uphold international fairness and justice, and to promote the progress of the international rule of law," Guo said.

"On the question of Palestine, China has always been standing on the side of fairness and justice, and firmly supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people. We look forward to the international community, guided by the court's advisory opinion, effectively alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and making unremitting efforts to promote a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian question at an early date," said Guo.

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted 51-50 to effectively block a bipartisan resolution aimed at curbing President Donald Trump's authority to use military force in Venezuela, after two GOP senators flipped under intense pressure from the White House.

After senators Josh Hawley and Todd Young reversed their position and left the chamber deadlocked 50-50, U.S. Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote on a procedural motion, derailing the measure that would have required the president to obtain congressional approval before taking further military action in the oil-rich South American nation.

The resolution was introduced in the wake of a U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. The U.S. Senate on January 8 voted 52 to 47 to advance the war powers resolution.

Trump had publicly criticized the five Republicans who joined all Democrats to back the bill, saying they "should never be elected to office again."

The president also called each of the five senators to vent his frustration over their votes, said a report from The Hill.
