The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) will host "the International Conference on New Media and Social Media: New Media Literacy in the AI Age" at its Tai Po campus for two consecutive days from 4th November. Prof. John Lee Chi-Kin, the President of EdUHK and Director of the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation, stated in the speech that since new media skills have become one of the essential qualities in contemporary society, EdUHK would establish "the Institute for Global New Media, Arts, and Education" to promote related research and practice.

The use of new media has been progressively integrated into modern people's lives, but the cultivation of media attainments is still a relatively new field in the education sector. Prof. Lee took the sources of users' news as an example, saying, "Fewer and fewer people read newspapers. They mainly obtain news through mobile phones," which indicates that the influence of new media in terms of dissemination is now far exceeding that of traditional media. He joked, "You can choose not to learn anything, but you must acquire new media skills."

Prof. Lee pointed out that there's no fixed definition for new media. "The new media of five years ago, as well as the new media of now and five years from now, are all constantly changing and have no fixed form." He concluded that the core features of new media would include interactivity, diversity, and participability. The audience has shifted from passive reception to active participation, which has constituted a sharp contrast to the traditional newspaper.

As an educator, prof. Lee focuses on the education and cultivation of "new media attainments". He pointed out that, since the risks such as information overload and fake news would be more severe in the current AI era, the ability of critical thinking would be of vital importance. "Besides creating diverse media information, it is even more crucial to cultivate the capacity to distinguish right from wrong." He revealed that the EdUHK would establish "the Institute for Global New Media, Arts, and Education", hoping to conduct relevant educational practices and research on new media technologies such as social media, artificial intelligence, etc.
