Hamas wants more pressure on Israel before ceasefire's next phase

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Hamas leader on Tuesday threatened to not move into the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement until more pressure is put on Israel to open a key border crossing, cease deadly strikes and allow more aid into the Palestinian territory.

The accusation came as Israel’s government says it is ready to move into the next and more complicated phase of the ceasefire deal, while calling on the militant group to return the remains of the last Israeli hostage held in Gaza.

Husam Badran, a member of Hamas' political wing, called for the “full implementation of all the terms of the first phase” before moving forward, including an end to what he called the continuing demolition of Palestinian homes in the majority of the territory still controlled by Israel.

Israel’s military operations in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 376 Palestinians since the ceasefire took hold on Oct. 10, according to Palestinian health officials.

Hamas has little leverage in ceasefire negotiations and could come under heavy pressure from regional powers like Qatar and Turkey to not hit the brakes on the fragile truce.

Israel has also accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire. It has defended its strikes as a response to attacks against its soldiers or people getting too close to the area it controls, though a number of people killed have been women and children and some strikes have occurred in the “safe zone," according to Palestinian health officials.

As a humanitarian crisis continues in Gaza, the United Nations and other aid organizations said that not nearly enough aid is entering the territory.

Israel said on Wednesday it would begin to allow aid into Gaza through a crossing on the Jordan-Israel border.

The U.S.-led plan outlining the future for the devastated territory has gained momentum in recent weeks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel and Hamas are “very shortly expected to move into the second phase of the ceasefire,” after Hamas returns the remains of the last hostage. Hamas has said the destruction by Israeli strikes in Gaza has been an obstacle in their search for remains.

Meanwhile, officials have said that an international body tasked with governing Gaza in the ceasefire's next phase is expected to be announced by the end of the year.

The Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel killed around 1,200 people while 251 were taken hostage. Almost all of the hostages or their remains have been returned in ceasefires or other deals.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Palestinian toll has topped 70,365. Its count does not distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says roughly half of those killed have been women and children. The ministry operates under the Hamas-run government. It is staffed by medical professionals and maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by the international community.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — A second-half double from substitute Christian Pulisic gave AC Milan a come-from- behind 3-2 win over Torino on Monday and swept it back to the top of Italy's Serie A.

Weekend wins for title rivals Napoli and Internazionale left Milan in third and it knew three points were required to return to the summit.

However, it was 2-0 down after 17 minutes.

Nikola Vlašić gave the home side the lead with a penalty after nine minutes, and then made the second goal eight minutes later when he powered forward to feed Duvan Zapata, whose powerful angled drive beat Mike Maignan from 12 meters.

Milan got back into the game seven minutes later, Adrien Rabiot lashing in a shot from 35 meters that will feature in many goal of the season competitions come May.

It fell to American forward Pulisic to turn the game around with two second-half goals. After 67 minutes, one minute after replacing Davide Bartesaghi, he found himself unmarked in the box and made no mistake from close range.

Ten minutes later Pulisic put Milan ahead for the first time in the match when he swept home a low cross from the right.

Milan avoided what would have been only its second defeat of the season and extended its unbeaten league run to 13 games.

The result leaves Torino, a club with the worst defense in the league, in 16th place, one of four teams on 14 points.

In Udine, Genoa won a second consecutive league match for the first time in almost two years when a late goal from Brooke Norton-Cuffy secured a 2-1 victory over Udinese.

The 83rd-minute decider was the England under-21 international’s first goal for the club since signing from Arsenal last year.

It followed a 34th-minute penalty from Ruslan Malinovskyi that put Genoa ahead, and a 65th minute equalizer by Jakub Piotrowski.

The result maintained Genoa’s revival under new coach Daniele De Rossi. It is unbeaten in its last four, with eight points from 12 since the former Roma midfielder took the helm.

The win lifted Genoa into 14th place, one of the four teams on 14 points. Udinese is three places above it with 18.

At the bottom of the table, a penalty from Adrian Benedyczak gave Parma a 1-0 win at Pisa.

The Polish forward struck after 40 minutes to move Parma four points clear of the relegation zone.

M’Bala Nzola came close three times for the home side in the second half. His day got worse in stoppage time when he was shown a straight red card for a senseless kick at Mandela Keita.

The result leaves Pisa third-bottom with 10 points from 14 games.
