Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine worth about $2 million at airport

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (December 22) detected a drug trafficking case involving baggage concealment at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 3 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $2 million.

A male passenger, aged 26, arrived in Hong Kong from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Doha, Qatar, yesterday. During customs clearance, Customs officers found the batch of suspected cocaine concealed in the false compartment of his check-in suitcase. The man was subsequently arrested.

The arrested man has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug, and he will appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (December 24).

Customs will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis. The department also reminds members of the public to stay alert and not participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return. They must not accept hiring or delegation from another party to carry controlled items into and out of Hong Kong. They are also reminded not to carry unknown items for other people.

Customs will continue to apply a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

Land Registry releases statistics for March

The Land Registry today (April 2) released its statistics for March 2026.

* The number of sale and purchase agreements for all building units received for registration in March was 7 737 (-2.4 per cent compared with February 2026 but +16.2 per cent compared with March 2025)

* The 12-month moving average for March was 7 341 (1.2 per cent above the 12-month moving average for February 2026 and 23.6 per cent above that for March 2025)

* The total consideration for sale and purchase agreements of building units in March was $62.3 billion (+0.3 per cent compared with February 2026 and +36.5 per cent compared with March 2025)

* Among the sale and purchase agreements, 6 316 were for residential units (-5.3 per cent compared with February 2026 but +17.7 per cent compared with March 2025)

* The total consideration for sale and purchase agreements in respect of residential units was $55.2 billion (-4.2 per cent compared with February 2026 but +42.2 per cent compared with March 2025)

Statistics on sales of residential units do not include sale and purchase agreements relating to sales of units under the Home Ownership Scheme, the Private Sector Participation Scheme, the Tenants Purchase Scheme, etc, unless the premium of the unit concerned has been paid after the sale restriction period.

Figures on sale and purchase agreements received for the past 12 months, the year-on-year rate of change and breakdown figures on residential sales have also been released.

As deeds may not be lodged with the Land Registry until up to 30 days after the transaction, these statistics generally relate to land transactions in the previous month.
