A spokesman of China's central government slammed the United States for massive arms sales to the Taiwan region at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, urging it to handle the Taiwan question with extreme prudence.
Peng Qing'en, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office made the remarks in response to a media query about 11 billion-dollar arms sales from the U.S. to Taiwan.
"The Taiwan question is the core of China's core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in the China-U.S. relations. The U.S. blatantly announced its plan of massive arms sales to China's Taiwan region, grossly interfering with China's internal affairs, seriously violating the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, especially the August 17 Communiqué, seriously undermining China's sovereignty and security interests, and sending a gravely wrong signal to Taiwan separatist forces. We resolutely oppose and solemnly condemn it. We demand that the U.S. immediately stop arming Taiwan, stop conniving at Taiwan separatists, earnestly uphold the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, deliver on the promises made by U.S. leaders, and handle the Taiwan question with extreme prudence," said Peng.
"The DPP (Democratic Progressive Part) regime stubbornly attempts to solicit U.S. support for secession, seeks to secede by force, continuously tout their so-called 'determination to defend,' even at the cost of turning Taiwan into a powder keg and an arsenal, and using people in Taiwan as cannon fodder for Taiwan separatists. All this will only bring catastrophes to compatriots in Taiwan, which fully bares their vicious nature as peace destroyers, crisis makers, and warmongers. People from various sectors in Taiwan should clearly recognize the DPP regime's vicious nature of shamelessly selling out Taiwan and inciting war. We solemnly warn the DPP regime that the reunification of China is an unstoppable trend. Should the Taiwan separatists dare to cross the red line, we will definitely strike a head-on blow against them," said Peng.
