A mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday lashed out at Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for seeking secession by banking on external forces and building up military capabilities.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that recent poll findings indicate the international community and the people on the Taiwan island are dissatisfied with a string of separatist-minded actions of the DPP authorities.

"A recent poll conducted by the CGTN for global internet users shows that 90 percent of respondents believe the DPP authorities' accelerated arming of Taiwan has pushed the Taiwan people into a dangerous brink of war. Another poll on the island shows that over 60 percent of Taiwan residents are unwilling to see themselves or their family members sent to the battlefield. These reflect a consensus in Taiwan that buying weapons doesn't bring security and will only accelerate Taiwan's slide into danger. These also show Taiwan people are strongly dissatisfied with the DPP authorities' actions of wasting public funds on appeasing external forces and paying foreign arms dealers," Zhu said.

The spokeswoman stressed that the DPP authorities' actions of seeking "Taiwan secession" poses the biggest threat to the safety and interests of the people in Taiwan.

"The DPP authorities, in pursuit of their selfish political interests, continuously increase defense budgets, promote 'everyone-a-soldier' rhetoric and hype up 'war panic', tying the Taiwan people to the 'Taiwan secession' war chariot and attempting to 'seek secession through foreign support' and 'seek succession through military means', which poses the greatest real threat to the safety and interests of the people in Taiwan," she said.
