China's foreign trade hit a new record high in 2025, with significant progress registered in multiple aspects, said a senior official of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) on Wednesday.

China's foreign trade expanded 3.8 percent year on year in yuan terms in 2025, the latest official data released by the GAC showed.

In 2025, the country's foreign trade reached 45.47 trillion yuan (about 6.48 trillion U.S. dollars), the administration said, noting that China's foreign trade has maintained growth for the ninth consecutive year since 2017, the administration said.

Exports grew 6.1 percent year on year to 26.99 trillion yuan last year, while imports edged up 0.5 percent from one year earlier to 18.48 trillion yuan, the data showed.

Speaking at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office on China's foreign trade in 2025 in Beijing, Wang Jun, deputy head of the GAC, said that China's foreign trade last year showed progresses in multiple aspects.

"In 2025, China set a new record in foreign trade, with the total value of imports and exports topping 45 trillion yuan, which hit a new record high. China continues to maintain the status as the world's largest trading nation in goods," said the official.

China's foreign trade market became more diversified last year, during which there were trade flows between China and more than 240 other countries and regions, and China saw growth in trade with over 190 other countries and regions, Wang said.

"In 2025, China's imports and exports with Belt and Road Initiative partner countries rose by 6.3 percent to 23.6 trillion yuan, accounting for 51.9 percent of the total value of imports and exports in the year. The country's trade with ASEAN, Latin America and Africa respectively reached 7.55 trillion yuan, 3.93 trillion yuan and 2.49 trillion yuan in the year, up 8 percent, 6.5 percent and 18.4 percent respectively year on year," the official said.

"China's 2025 exports of high-tech products increased by 13.2 percent year on year to 5.25 trillion yuan, with those of 'new trio (electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and photovoltaic products) and wind turbines surging by 27.1 percent and 48.7 percent respectively. In the year, the exports of China's home-grown-brand products grew by 12.9 percent, with the proportion in total export value up by 1.4 percentage points," the official continued.

Starting in the second quarter of last year, China's imports maintained growth for three consecutive quarters, he said.

"Last year, China imported mechanical and electrical products worth 7.41 trillion yuan, up 5.7 percent over the previous year. The imports of electronic components and computer parts rose by 9.7 percent and 20 percent, while imports of crude oil and metal ore went up by 4.4 percent and 5.2 percent, and those of dried and fresh fruits and edible vegetable oil by 5.6 percent and 16.6 percent year on year," said the official.

He said Chinese enterprises showed better vitality in foreign trade in 2025.

"In 2025, there were over 780,000 market entities with import and export records in China. Among them, private enterprises continued to play the role of 'main engine' in foreign trade in 2025, with their trade volume reaching 26.04 trillion yuan, up 7.1 percent year on year, and growing to account for 57.3 percent of the total value of imports and exports in the year," said the official.
