Japanese PM Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan highly irresponsible: Slovak official

A senior Slovak official has criticized the erroneous comments on Taiwan by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, calling them highly irresponsible and a threat to regional stability.

In an interview with China Media Group (CMG) on January 30, Michal Bartek, vice chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security of the National Council of Slovakia, warned that Takaichi's remarks on a "Taiwan contingency" are very dangerous, posing serious risks and fueling instability in East Asia.

"Instead of reducing tensions, they make the situation worse and increase instability in East Asia. Japan has a historical responsibility to act with caution and humility, but today we see a return to confrontational language that harms regional stability and damages long-standing relations with China. While China is promoting peaceful development and dialogue, Tokyo is increasingly acting as a provocateur. Instead of following an independent foreign policy, Tokyo is aligning closely with Washington, even when this conflicts with its own economic and regional interests. This approach is short-sighted and harmful to Japan in the long term," said Bartek.

Bartek also said that Takaichi's remarks challenge the international consensus on the one-China principle, violate the international law and pose a threat to global stability.

"Under international law and long-established diplomatic practice, these statements clearly challenge the one-China principle. This principle is the foundation of the international consensus. When Japanese politicians suggest involvement in the Taiwan issue, they violate both the spirit and the letter of existing agreements. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and questioning this fact goes against international law and threatens global stability," said Bartek.
