The economic and trade teams of China and the United States are maintaining close communication at all levels and exchanging views in a timely manner, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

Chinese commerce ministry spokesman He Yadong made the statement at a regular press briefing in Beijing when responding to reports which quoted U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as saying that senior U.S. Treasury staff visited China and met Chinese officials last week, and the two sides discussed preparations for the next high-level meeting.

"The economic and trade teams of China and the United States are maintaining close communication at all levels through the consultation mechanism, and having exchange of views in a timely manner on implementation of the common understandings reached by the two presidents in Busan and the outcomes of the economic and trade consultation in Kuala Lumpur, and on resolving each other's economic and trade concerns. China stands ready to make joint efforts with the United States to act on the common understandings reached by the two presidents during their meetings and phone talks, work together while upholding the attitude of equality, respect and mutual benefit, enhance dialogue and communication, properly manage differences, expand practical cooperation, and promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations," said the commerce ministry spokesman.

The U.S. Senate on Thursday failed to advance a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), raising the prospect of a partial government shutdown as temporary funding for the department expires at the end of Friday.

The procedural vote was 52-47, short of the 60 votes required to advance the bill.

The legislative stall came as the White House and congressional Democrats have been unable to reach an agreement on immigration enforcement regulations, following two fatal shootings by federal law enforcement officers in the city of Minneapolis.

"Democrats have been very clear: We will not support an extension of the status quo," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday.

The recent fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens -- Renee Good and Alex Pretti -- by federal enforcement in Minneapolis have prompted Democrats to seek changes to how immigration agencies operate.

The Congress has recently passed a funding package to fund multiple U.S. federal agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year, yet DHS only received a two-week continuing resolution at current funding levels.
