As China's Two Sessions approach, diplomats from Middle East countries said they will be watching closely for indications of China's national strategies and the direction of its development plans.

The "two sessions" are the annual meetings of China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), and the top political advisory body, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Both bodies serve five-year terms and hold a plenary session each year, generally in March.

The fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress and the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference will kick off on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Jassim Al-Najem, ambassador of Kuwait to China, highlighted that the Two Sessions often send signals about the country's economic policies.

"Kuwait pays close attention to China's 'Two Sessions'. The strategic signals released during this key event shape China’s policy direction in areas like economic development, structural reform, opening-up, and the modernization of its economic governance system," said the ambassador.

He pointed out that digital and green technology, and efforts to attract investment and improve the business environment are among the areas that capture the most attention in Kuwait.

"We are particularly focused on policies related to high-quality development, enhancing innovation and advanced technology, the digital economy, green development, and the transition to clean energy. We are also closely watching policy guidance on improving the investment climate, protecting investors' rights, expanding openness to global markets, and facilitating trade and capital flows. These measures will help boost international confidence in the Chinese economy. Against this backdrop, we believe these policies will have a direct and positive impact on the economic partnership between China and Kuwait, as well as on China-Arab cooperation as a whole," he said.

Also speaking with CGTN, Khaled Nazmy, ambassador of Egypt to China, said that Egypt seeks to learn from China's development to pursue its own growth.

"We continue to follow closely the progress, development and modernization achievements China has made across various fields. China's five-year plans, along with its policies of opening-up and international cooperation, have enabled us to benefit and have also helped to further strengthen cooperation among Global South countries. We look forward to drawing on China's experience to build a future of shared prosperity for Egypt, China, and the Global South as a whole," said the ambassador.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his call for de-escalation, immediate cessation of hostilities and genuine dialogue and negotiations in the Middle East in line with the UN Charter, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Monday.

Speaking at a press conference at the UN headquarters, Dujarric said that over the past 48 hours or so, the secretary-general has been in touch with a number of regional leaders, including Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi.

He stressed that what is needed now in the region more than anything is a way out.

"Turning to the situation in the Middle East, over the past 48 hours or so, the secretary-general has been in touch with a number of regional leaders. What is needed now in the region more than anything is a way out. To that end, the secretary-general again calls for de-escalation, an immediate cessation of hostilities and genuine dialogue and negotiations, in line with the Charter of the United Nations," he said.

Dujarric also expressed deep concern regarding reports of an attack on a primary school in southern Iran, which, Iran said, has led to the deaths of 165 school girls.

He mentioned that the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has called for an immediate halt to hostilities and for the de-escalation of the situation.

The United States and Israel on Saturday launched "major combat operations" against Iran, claiming that the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed.

Iran retaliated with a series of counterattacks against Israel and U.S. targets across the region, with explosions reported in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia, among other countries.
