Members of China's national political advisory body highlighted the country's achievements in areas such as economic growth, science and technology innovation and green development on Wednesday.

The fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, concluded in Beijing on Wednesday.

Justin Lin Yifu, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University, praised China's economic contribution to the world.

"During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), our economy surged through four major milestones over five years. Particularly against the backdrop of a global economic slowdown, we achieved an average annual growth rate of 5.4 percent, contributing approximately 30 percent to global economic growth each year. This represents an exceptionally impressive achievement. We can fully leverage the advantages we possess domestically thanks to the most crucial factor -- having General Secretary Xi Jinping at the helm to guide our course with scientific decision-making and uniting the entire nation in overcoming challenges. As long as we do our part diligently, no matter how high the waves may rise, we will forge ahead through the storm," he said.

Deng Zhonghan, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, stressed China's strategy in advancing scientific and technological development.

"General Secretary Xi Jinping has called for striving to make new breakthroughs in enhancing original innovation and tackling key core technologies so as to secure the high ground in science and technology. This has charted the course for our scientific and technological personnel. In the development of emerging and future industries, we must boldly explore new paths, forge independent technological routes to achieve leapfrog development to truly make scientific and technological innovation the core driving force of high-quality development," said Deng.

Gao Jixi, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and principal investigator with the Satellite Application Center for Ecology and Environment under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, put an emphasized on the draft environmental code for deliberation this year.

"At this year's two sessions, we discussed China's second law to be named a 'code' -- a draft environmental code, marking a new phase of systematic integration and coordinated efficiency in advancing ecological and environmental rule of law. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, we will accelerate the green transformation of development patterns and expand pathways for realizing the value of ecological products," he said.

The "two sessions" -- which refer to the annual meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's supreme organ of state power, and the National Committee of the CPPCC -- are a key event on the country's political calendar.

The fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC opened in Beijing on March 4.

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday slammed Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te over his latest remarks on cross-Strait relations, accusing him of promoting secessionism and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a press release that Lai's speech marking his second anniversary in office was "filled with lies and deception, hostility and confrontation."

Chen accused Lai of stubbornly adhering to a secessionist stance in pursuit of "Taiwan independence," while exaggerating the so-called threats from the mainland and intensifying confrontation across the Strait.

Lai played an old trick of advocating the secessionist agenda on one hand and, on the other, calling insincerely for dialogue and exchanges with the mainland, attempting to mislead people in Taiwan and deceive the international community, he said.

Chen said that these common tricks have been seen through by more and more Taiwanese people. Their deceptive and provocative actions will be met with firm opposition from compatriots on both sides and the international community, and are doomed to fail.

Reaffirming the mainland's position on the Taiwan question, Chen said Taiwan has never been a country, is not one now, and will never become one in the future.

He described the Taiwan question as a historical issue left over from a Chinese civil war in the 1940s.

No election result in Taiwan could alter the fact that Taiwan is part of China or sever the historical and legal bonds linking the two sides of the Strait, according to Chen.

The mainland would never allow any person or force to pursue secessionist activities under any pretext, he added.

Calling secessionists "the chief culprit" who undermines cross-Strait peace, Chen said the mainland would continue to uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, unite broadly with Taiwan compatriots, combat secessionist activities, and safeguard peace and stability across the Strait.
