TD's Autonomous Vehicle Applications Promotion Working Group convenes first meeting

The Commissioner for Transport, Ms Angela Lee, today (March 17) chaired the first meeting of the Autonomous Vehicle Applications Promotion Working Group, pooling the efforts of the government, industry, academic and research sectors to accelerate and foster the launch of different trials of autonomous vehicles (AVs) by the industry and exploring their application options, realising the objectives set out in the Policy Address and the Transport Strategy Blueprint.

The Working Group comprises autonomous driving research scholars, information technology professionals, other experts and stakeholders, and representatives from relevant bureaux/departments. It will monitor the progress of various AV trials, oversee the trial and application of AV or vehicle-to-everything (V2X) initiatives, and strengthen publicity and public education to enhance public understanding of autonomous driving. A Sub-committee under the Working Group will be set up to provide technical support on AV and V2X projects.

Ms Lee said, "Promoting and scaling up the safe driverless development of AVs in an orderly manner towards commercial operation is a key step in deepening the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence into Hong Kong's transport. We will leverage the flexibility of the AV regulatory regime, keep pace with technological advancement while ensuring road safety, and draw on collective wisdom to expand AV applications steadily. This will bring the convenience of innovation and technology into Hong Kong, offering opportunities to enterprises as well as benefitting members of the public."

At the Working Group's first meeting, members were briefed on the progress of trials approved with an AV pilot licence and AV projects funded by the Smart Traffic Fund to date, and exchanged views on how to facilitate cross-district operation and optimise the Code of Practice for Trial and Pilot Use of Autonomous Vehicles. In addition, members were updated on the latest AV technological developments and application experience on the Mainland and overseas, and provided views on promoting local application. The Working Group also discussed ways to step up collaboration with the industry and pilot operators to promote autonomous driving in the community.

The terms of reference and membership list of the Working Group are set out in the Annex.

Hong Kong Customs seizes live lizards of suspected scheduled endangered species and live snakes

Hong Kong Customs seized eight live lizards, in which seven were suspected to be scheduled endangered species, and 24 live snakes with a total estimated market value of about $600,000 at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (March 16).

Through risk assessment, Customs officers yesterday inspected an air consignment declared to contain clothing imported from Australia. Upon inspection, Customs officers discovered the batch of live lizards and live snakes concealed inside cloth bags from snack cans.

The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) for follow-up action.

Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586), any person importing, exporting or possessing specimens of endangered species not in accordance with the Ordinance commits an offence and will be liable to a maximum fine of $10 million and imprisonment for 10 years upon conviction with the specimens forfeited.

Hong Kong Customs reminds the public that the import of animals, birds and reptiles is controlled under the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Ordinance (Cap. 139) and Rabies Ordinance (Cap. 421). These animals should not be brought into Hong Kong unless a permit is obtained in advance from the AFCD.

Members of the public may report any suspected smuggling activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
