Persons engaged statistics

In December 2025, the selected industries as a whole engaged 2 710 000 persons. The import and export trade engaged 339 700 persons, followed by professional and business services (excluding cleaning and similar services) engaging 318 700 persons, financing and insurance 241 600 persons, retail trade 228 300 persons, education 219 400 persons, and food and beverage services 217 600 persons.

Increases were mainly observed in the industries of real estate (3.6% or 5 300 persons), financing and insurance (3.6% or 8 300 persons), and human health services (3.1% or 5 000 persons). On the other hand, the number of persons engaged decreased mainly in the industries of construction sites (manual workers only) (-10.8% or -13 100 persons), import and export trade (-4.2% or -14 800 persons), cleaning and similar services (-2.1% or -1 700 persons), and retail trade (-1.9% or -4 400 persons). Number of persons engaged for selected major industries are shown in Table 1.

Vacancies statistics

Among the 46 000 private sector vacancies in December 2025, 5 710 were from the industry of financing and insurance, 5 020 from education, 4 400 from residential care and social work services, 4 200 from professional and business services (excluding cleaning and similar services), and 3 510 from food and beverage services.

On the other hand, vacancies increased mainly in the industry of financing and insurance (790 or 16%). Job vacancies figures for selected major industries are shown in Table 2.

Analysed by major occupation category, private sector vacancies were observed mainly in the categories of services and sales workers (15 250 vacancies), professionals (8 670 vacancies), and associate professionals (8 000 vacancies). Job vacancies figures by major occupation category are shown in Table 3.

Seasonally adjusted statistics

For discerning the latest trend in the number of persons engaged and vacancies in the private sector, it is useful to look at changes over a three-month period in the respective seasonally adjusted figures. Compared with September 2025, the seasonally adjusted total number of persons engaged and total vacancies in the surveyed industries increased by 0.2% and decreased by 3.9% respectively in December 2025. The changes over three-month periods in the seasonally adjusted series of persons engaged and vacancies are shown in Table 4.

Other information

The above statistics on persons engaged and vacancies were obtained from the Quarterly Survey of Employment and Vacancies and the Quarterly Employment Survey of Construction Sites conducted by the C&SD. In the former survey, some economic activities (e.g. those dominated by self-employment, including taxi operators and hawkers) are not covered. Therefore, the respective figures for persons engaged and vacancies relate only to those selected industries included in the survey. In the latter survey on construction sites, the number of persons engaged and vacancies relate to manual workers only.

A detailed breakdown of the above statistics is published in the following reports:

Hong Kong Customs special operation combats sale of counterfeit hard disks and memory cards by computer storage device distributor

Hong Kong Customs mounted a special enforcement operation yesterday (March 19) in Tuen Mun to combat the sale of counterfeit computer storage devices by a computer storage device distributor, and seized about 17 000 items of suspected counterfeit computer storage devices, including about14 000 pieces of hard disks and about3 000 pieces of memory cards, with a total estimated market value of about $25 million. One person was arrested.

Customs earlier received information from the trademark owner representative, alleging that a computer storage device distributor was offering counterfeit computer storage devices for sale in the market. After a comprehensive investigation and with the assistance of the trademark owner, Customs officers took enforcement action yesterday and searched an industrial unit in Tuen Mun. Upon a follow-up investigation, another industrial unit in the same building was searched. A 42-year-old man was arrested and the batch of suspected counterfeit computer storage devices, and materials and tools for packing were seized.

The arrested person has been detained for investigation. The investigation is ongoing and the likelihood of further arrests is not ruled out.

Customs will continue to step up inspections and enforcement to vigorously combat the sale of different kinds of counterfeit goods.

Customs reminds consumers to procure goods at reputable shops and check with the trademark owners or their authorised agents if the authenticity of a product is in doubt. Traders should also be cautious and prudent in merchandising since selling counterfeit goods is a serious crime and offenders are liable to criminal sanctions.

Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who sells or possesses for sale any goods with a forged trademark commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.

Members of the public may report any suspected counterfeiting activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002/).
