"Horse Power," China's first giant-screen film inspired by Chinese zodiac animals, premiered in London on Thursday, showcasing a fusion of cultural heritage and cutting-edge cinematic technology.

2026 is the Year of the Horse in the 12-animal Chinese zodiac. In China, the horse traditionally stands for loyalty, energy and a pioneering spirit, and is considered one of the zodiac's most popular animals.

Produced mainly by China Media Group (CMG), the film employs ultra-high-definition dynamic filming to capture high-speed motion and rare moments in vivid details, telling distinctive stories of horses from around the world.

The screening drew nearly 400 guests from a range of sectors in both China and the United Kingdom.

In his speech at the screening, Li Liyan, minister counselor for cultural affairs of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, noted that the film's screening is a vivid manifestation of bilateral cooperation in cultural and creative industries.

As China's first 3D giant-screen wildlife film, the film traces the life journeys of seven horses from five countries, using spectacular imagery to present the spiritual symbolism and cultural significance of horses throughout human history.

After the premiere, a discussion about horses and their cultural meanings were held. Director Mark Brownlow, chief producer Shu Yun, and other cast and crew joined the discussion to share behind-the-scenes stories about the film's making.

"Britain is a kingdom of wildlife, as well as a kingdom of wildlife-themed productions. Therefore, being able to present a story of the Year of the Horse and the qualities of the horse in the Chinese zodiac culture through our film in a way that everyone can accept and enjoy is a creative breakthrough for us," said Shu Yun.

The film attracted positive feedback, prompting viewers to reflect on the horse's symbolic significance across different cultures.

"I like horses a lot. I like documentaries a lot. I'm very excited," said a moviegoer.

"And our other brother has helped to make the film about horses, so we're here to support him," said another moviegoer.

"Horses are so important in so many cultures, and actually, if you look at art and history and music, you see horses throughout every single culture and that is so important. I think it's actually beautiful -- we're bringing together the different aspects of different cultures to try and understand each other through the horse," said Anna Hall, chief executive at Hurlingham Polo Association.
