From souped-up exteriors to high-performance parts, a dazzling array of custom vehicles is on display at the 2026 Cool Car Show in Shenzhen, Asia's biggest modified car expo, highlighting the newest consumer trends sweeping the automotive after-market.
The show is co-organized by the automotive sub-council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and Jiuzhou International Exhibition Media Technology Co., Ltd. First held in 2021, this year marks its fourth edition. It serves not only as a key window into cutting-edge industry trends but also as an annual barometer driving innovation and development across the global automotive industry chain.
This year's four-day event kicked off on Friday at the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center, bringing together a host of automakers at the forefront of car modification to showcase their imaginative creations, offering diverse options for enthusiasts eager to personalize their rides.
Unlike the conventional car era, when modifications were all about engine power and exhaust notes, today's modification scene is defined by far greater diversity -- spanning everything from exterior and interior styling to advanced features and digital tech.
On the visual front, color-change wraps and paint protection films have become the most popular choice for "light modification." By playing with different colors and textures, consumers can give their cars a fresh new look -- sometimes as often as every day.
"Out of every 100 new cars, 17 to 18 get wrapped, with an annual compound growth rate of 120 percent. For our brand alone, the first quarter of this year is on track to double last year's figures. We offer over 200 colors, and what's driving consumption is self-expression -- people are doing it for themselves," said Zhan Jin, an exhibitor.
"What draws many car owners to this is the emotional value it brings. A lot of consumers have us install custom cartoon patterns on their vehicles, and many younger customers ask us to replicate their favorite colors, designs, or even specific IP characters onto their cars. We're seeing that kind of demand grow at an exponential rate year over year," said another exhibitor Li Haidong.
As the main demographic driving car consumption shifts to younger generations, automobiles have evolved from mere modes of transportation into "big toys" that reflect personal lifestyle choices.
This shift in mindset has fueled explosive growth in China's automotive aftermarket. A growing number of consumers now lean toward vehicles with versatile features -- many of which go beyond what was traditionally expected from a passenger car.
"This model already meets the basic requirements for a recreational vehicle -- water, electricity, a bathroom, and a pop-up roof tent -- enough for one to three days of light camping. And, as a new-energy vehicle, it offers six kilowatts of external power output, which solves a lot of real-world challenges," said Pei Zhisen, an exhibitor.
"Setting up a tent, preparing a simple meal, having coffee, and enjoying the scenery -- it's the kind of experience we really look forward to," said a consumer.
The prospects for China's vehicle modification market are bright. The State Council has explicitly called for expanding aftermarket consumption, including car modification. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce and other government departments have introduced pilot programs to refine modification scope and technical standards. Cities including Guangzhou and Shenzhen are among the first to pilot legal modification zones.
Industry experts said that 2026 will mark the year policies move from top-level design to concrete implementation, setting the stage for the country's automotive modification market to take off.
