The toy and pet products section at this year's Canton Fair is sparking a wave of emotional value consumption, with innovative offerings aimed at forging deep personal connections with buyers.
The 139th China Import and Export Fair, widely known as the Canton Fair, is currently taking place in south China's Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. The biannual event is being held in three phases at the city's main exhibition venue, with the final phase running from May 1 to 5.
The toy exhibition area shattered the traditional image of toys being just for children by showcasing a diverse range of products tailored not just for kids, but for all ages. Referred to as "emotional consumption" by industry analysts and sometimes known as "comfort shopping," it describes the tendency of consumers to prioritize mental satisfaction over functionality.
Oversized plush toys, uniquely designed collectible figurines, and creative 3D building toys are drawing a steady stream of international buyers eager to explore and discuss cooperation.
"I think these are really interesting for all types of people, all of different ages and everything, even if you are very young or older. And I think it's awesome to play with this and build this. And I think it's a very nice product," said Paul Chapuis, French buyer.
"Our products are not just for children, but for people of all ages. We incorporate local culture and Chinese elements into our products for different countries and regions, hoping to share this happiness with families worldwide," said Hu Liwei, exhibitor.
The pet products section is also drawing attention, debuting new items such as convenient foldable pet crates, fully automated smart litter boxes, silent pet feeders, and modular aquariums.
"We have invested in R and D to create more customized products for pet owners. This way, we can better meet consumers' emotional needs in pet care," said Yu Youkai, general manager of Guangzhou PawGether Pet Product Technology Co., Ltd.
The China Consumers Association reports that a growing number of young consumers view "mood enhancement" as a crucial factor in their purchasing decisions.
