Hong Kong Customs detects three drug trafficking cases involving passengers at airport

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (May 2) and today (May 3) detected three drug trafficking cases involving passengers at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 11.6 kilograms of suspected heroin and 6 kg of suspected cannabis buds, with a total estimated market value of about $8.3 million. Three men were arrested.

The first case involved a 52-year-old male passenger arriving in Hong Kong from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, yesterday. During customs clearance, Customs officers found about 7 kg of suspected heroin, with an estimated market of about $4.3 million, inside his carry-on baggage. The man was subsequently arrested.

The second case involved a 31-year-old male passenger arriving in Hong Kong from Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday. During customs clearance, Customs officers found about 6 kg of suspected cannabis buds, with an estimated market of about $1.2 million, inside his carry-on baggage. The man was subsequently arrested.

The third case involved a 29-year-old male passenger arriving in Hong Kong from Penang, Malaysia, today. During customs clearance, Customs officers found about 4.6 kg of suspected heroin, with an estimated market of about $2.8 million, inside his carry-on baggage. The man was subsequently arrested.

The arrested persons in the three cases have each been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and the cases will bebrought up at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (May 4).

Customs will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis. The department also reminds members of the public to stay alert and not participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return. They must not accept hiring or delegation from another party to carry controlled items into and out of Hong Kong. They are also reminded not to carry unknown items for other people.

Customs will continue to apply a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

Members of the public may report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).

Fatal traffic accident in Airport District

Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident happened in Airport District today (May 4) in which a woman died.

Police received a report at 4.41am that a private car driven by a 67-year-old man was travelling along the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge towards Hong Kong with a 62-year-old female passenger on board. When approaching 80 Shun Wan Road, the private car reportedly lost control, rammed into multiple traffic cones, a kiosk and then sideturned.

The driver and passenger were trapped inside the vehicle and rescued by firemen. The male driver sustained limb injuries while the female passenger sustained multiple injuries. They were sent to Princess Margaret Hospital for medical treatment in conscious and unconscious state respectively. The female passenger was certified dead at 6.16am.

Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories South is under way.
