U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave their immediate reaction to the talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday, describing the high-level talks as "constructive".
In candid interviews with a China Media Group (CMG) reporter as they were leaving the Great Hall of the People following the talks, the two officials gave a positive response to how the more than two-hour discussions had gone.
Both Rubio and Bessent were in the room as the two heads of state talked about major issues concerning China-U.S. relations and world peace and development.
Rubio said the meeting "was good" and gave his outlook for the future of bilateral ties between the U.S. and China.
"It's important. So constructive, continued engagement, obviously, it's in everyone's interest to see stability in the world," he said.
Bessent also gave his initial assessment that the talks between President Xi and President Trump were "very constructive" as he left the venue.
At the invitation of Xi, Trump is on a state visit to China from Wednesday to Friday.
It marks the first visit by a U.S. president to China in almost nine years, after Xi previously hosted Trump in Beijing back in November 2017.
