Cooperation in education plays an important role in bilateral relations, as it is a vital bridge connecting people's hearts and passing on friendship between nations, said Chinese President Xi Jinping while addressing the opening ceremony of the China-Russia Years of Education on Wednesday.
Xi and visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Addressing the event, Xi said that China-Russia educational cooperation has continued to deepen and yielded notable results over the years, enriching the connotation of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.
"Education is a vital bridge connecting people's hearts and minds and passing on friendship between nations; it is a noble cause that benefits the present and future generations. The world is undergoing accelerated changes unseen in a century, and strengthening educational exchanges and cooperation to achieve innovation and sustainable development is a common choice for the development and revitalization of all countries. Taking the China-Russia Years of Education as an opportunity, both sides should further consolidate consensus on cooperation, expand areas of cooperation, and elevate the level of cooperation. Dear students, teachers, and friends, we say that a nation prospers when its education prospers, and a nation is strong when its education is strong. I firmly believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, the China-Russia Years of Education will be a complete success, and educational cooperation between the two countries will surely yield fruitful results," Xi said in his address.
Putin said the launch of the Russia-China Years of Education is of milestone significance, noting that more and more Russian people are now learning Chinese.
Through strengthening educational cooperation, Russia stands ready to work with China to enhance mutual understanding between the younger generations of the two countries, ensure the cause of Russia-China friendship is passed on from generation to generation, and promote greater development of bilateral relations, he said.
"I fully agree with the remarks of my friend, President Xi Jinping. Our joint launch of the Russia-China Years of Education is undoubtedly a landmark and significant initiative. The number of Russians learning Chinese has been increasing year by year, currently exceeding 100,000, with another 20,000 Russian citizens learning Chinese in China through various educational programs. I sincerely wish each of you outstanding achievements on your chosen paths," Putin said as he addressed attendees at the opening ceremony.
