China will take resolute countermeasures if the European Union (EU) insists on imposing discriminatory restrictions on Chinese companies and products, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

According to media reports, European commissioners are expected to discuss a new trade tool to counter China's so-called "overcapacity" issue.

At a regular press conference in Beijing, He Yadong, the spokesperson, urged the EU to stop applying double standard and do things that are conducive to China-EU ties.

"If we label trade surpluses as 'overcapacity,' then should EU's exports of automobiles, pharmaceuticals, wine and cosmetics also be labeled as 'overcapacity'? We have noticed that relevant countries are investigating the EU's 'overcapacity' issue, and the EU should not apply double standards under these circumstances," He said.

"We urge the EU side to face the reality squarely, return to the right track of dialogue and consultation, and do things that are truly conducive to the development of China-EU economic and trade relations. China will take resolute countermeasures if the EU insists on imposing discriminatory restrictions on Chinese companies and products," He said.
