The conference served as a focal point for an 80-strong business delegation from the Alliance visiting Hanoi from May 25 to 28. The delegation was jointly led by the Chairman of the Alliance, Dr Jonathan Choi, and the Director of the Singapore ETO, Ms Elsa Hung. Representing more than 50 Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland enterprises and institutions spanning a diverse range of sectors including traditional manufacturing, new materials, new energy, AI, data centres, biomedicine, and medical technology, the delegation participated with a clear focus on exploring "going global" opportunities in Vietnam and building connections with relevant Vietnamese enterprises.

Speaking at the conference, Ms Hung highlighted Hong Kong's close and growing ties with Vietnam and its role as an international financial centre, international trade centre and international innovation and technology hub. She emphasised Hong Kong's unique advantages under the "one country, two systems" principle in connecting the Chinese Mainland with the rest of the world and supporting Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland enterprises to go global, with Vietnam as a strategic partner on this journey. At the same time, Hong Kong stands ready as a premier gateway for Vietnamese enterprises to tap the Chinese Mainland's vast market, capital and innovation ecosystem as Vietnam actively accelerates its economic transformation and integrates deeper into global supply chains.

The conference featured thematic sessions on technology, manufacturing, trade, agriculture and more. Participants actively explored collaboration opportunities during the networking session afterwards.

During its visit to Hanoi, the delegation also convened a series of high-level meetings with Vietnam's Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Military and Civilian Medical Association, and the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency. Discussions focused on business opportunities on hi-tech innovation, AI, the green economy, biomedical technology and modern healthcare as well as Vietnam's development of an international financial centre.

The conclusion of both the conference and the high-level meetings underscores the Singapore ETO's ongoing commitment to promoting Hong Kong's strengths as a "super connector" and "super value-adder", supporting Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland enterprises in going global, and attracting more foreign enterprises to invest and operate in Hong Kong as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The Singapore ETO is also committed to supporting and promoting the ETE functional platform - established through the joint efforts of the economic and trade offices, InvestHK and the HKTDC - to assist Hong Kong small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups in exploring overseas markets through business missions and one-stop support services, while attracting more enterprises to invest and establish operations in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cannabis buds at airport

Hong Kong Customs today (May 31) detected a drug trafficking case involving baggage concealment at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 5 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds with an estimated market value of about $0.9 million.

A 31-year-old male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Koh Samui, Thailand, today. During customs clearance, Customs officers found the batch of suspected cannabis buds concealed in snack packaging inside his carry-on baggage. The man was subsequently arrested.

An investigation is ongoing.

Customs will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis. The department also reminds members of the public to stay alert and not to participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return. They must not accept hiring or delegation from another party to carry controlled items into and out of Hong Kong. They are also reminded not to carry unknown items for other people.

Customs will continue to apply a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

Members of the public may report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
