A Chinese central government spokeswoman on Wednesday warned that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, through their military build-up and war preparations aimed at splitting Taiwan from China, have pushed Taiwan residents into a dangerous situation fraught with the risk of war.

Zhu Fenglian, the spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing when asked about a nearly 300 billion New Taiwan dollars (around 9.54 billion U.S. dollars) arms purchase plan from the U.S., a move opposed by multiple Taiwan-based political parties and civic groups.

"Driven by their selfish political interests, the DPP authorities are ramping up military spending and war preparations to split Taiwan from China. They are squandering the hard-earned money of the people in Taiwan, acting as a willing ATM for the U.S. military-industrial complex. In turning Taiwan into a powder keg, they are forcing its people to become cannon fodder for their separatist agenda, and plunging them into the dire perils of war. We hope our compatriots in Taiwan will see the extreme danger of the DPP's stubborn separatist path, firmly oppose separatist moves and foreign interference, and join us in bringing cross-Strait relations back to peaceful development, to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as well as the people's security and well-being," said Zhu.

Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the United States, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Wednesday.

Zhu made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing when asked to comment on U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's keynote speech at the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore which made no mention of Taiwan, and instead highly praised the series of achievements from U.S. President Donald Trump's recent visit to China.

"The Taiwan question is China's internal affair and brooks no external interference. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the United States," Zhu said.
