Any scheme to seek Taiwan secession by relying on external forces or by military means is doomed to fail, Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang said at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

"Taiwan secession is as incompatible with cross-Strait peace as fire with water and maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the United States. Statements of the U.S. side on Taiwan in the recent time indicate that it has gained a better understanding of and attached greater importance to China's position and concerns on the Taiwan question. More and more facts confirm that China's ultimate and inevitable reunification is a trend unstoppable. Any schemes to seek separatism by relying on external forces or through military means are doomed to fail and forces that remain obstinate and go against the trend of the times will be swept away by the torrent of history," said Zhang.
