The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.04 percent to 99.947 at 3:00 p.m. (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.1548 U.S. dollars from 1.1550 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound dropped to 1.3380 U.S. dollars from 1.3388 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 160.50 Japanese yen, higher than 160.36 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.7994 Swiss francs from 0.7979 Swiss francs, and it decreased to 1.3937 Canadian dollars from 1.3952 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar rose to 9.4948 Swedish kronor from 9.4603 Swedish kronor.

International gold and silver prices both dropped on Wednesday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for August delivery fell 3.57 percent to settle at 4,133.30 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for July delivery dropped 0.77 percent to close at 64.740 dollars per ounce.
