Military means cannot resolve the fundamental problems of Iran situation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Thursday, urging relevant parties to immediately cease military operations in the region.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in response to a media query concerning the Iran situation, Lin called on all parties to return to dialogue and negotiations at an early date.

"China is gravely concerned over the current situation. Using force will only exacerbate the situation, and military means cannot resolve fundamental problems. The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of countries in the region should be respected and safeguarded. China strongly urges relevant parties to immediately stop military actions, return to dialogue and negotiations, respond to mediation efforts by relevant countries, and achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire at an early date. Since the outbreak of the conflict, China has maintained close communication with all relevant parties, including Iran, and actively working to promote a cessation of hostilities and advance peace efforts," Lin said.

China expresses deep condolences over the passing of Yohei Kono, former speaker of Japan's lower house who issued an apology over the country's wartime atrocities, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Thursday.

Kono passed away at the age of 89 on June 8, Japanese media reported.

"We express deep condolences over the passing of Mr. Kono and extend sincere sympathies to his family. Mr. Kono was an old friend of the Chinese people. He upheld a correct view of history. In 1993, as Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, he issued an official statement on the comfort women issue, acknowledging the responsibility of the Japanese government and expressing remorse and apology. The statement continues to have a positive impact to this day," said Lin at a regular news briefing in Beijing.
