NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Monday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers following a violent collision with right fielder Jasson Domínguez and was placed in concussion protocol.

With the Yankees down 7-0 in the fourth inning, Hao-Yu Lee hit a high popup to shallow right field. Chisholm ran back and attempted to make the catch but Domínguez charged in and caught the ball as his glove struck Chisholm in the face.

“I’m not sure exactly what happened,” manager Aaron Boone said after a 7-3 loss sent the Yankees to their fifth straight defeat. “Obviously we’re playing the infield in, so it’s a little bit that no-man’s land. I think JD called it late. I don’t know if he didn’t hear.”

Chisholm immediately fell down on the grass and was on his back for several minutes as Boone and athletic trainer Tim Lentych checked on him. After a few minutes, Chisholm stood up and walked slowly off the field under his own power. He was replaced at second base by Oswaldo Cabrera.

“It was really unfortunate,” Domínguez said. “They were playing infield in. In my mind, I've got to go catch the ball. I called it, but obviously I didn't call it loud enough. But really unfortunate what happened.”

Domínguez remained in the game and crashed hard into the outfield wall on the next play while catching Kerry Carpenter's drive to end the fourth.

“My elbow kind of went into my belly,” Domínguez said. “I was just out of breath. I'm OK.”

Chisholm struck out in his only at-bat and is hitting .222 with 12 homers and 33 RBIs in 81 games this season.

He was ejected Sunday night from New York’s 5-4, 10-inning loss in Boston by first base umpire Todd Tichenor when he spiked his helmet in the dirt behind home plate following a strikeout on a check-swing against Sonny Gray.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Ortiz had a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-3 comeback victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Held to one hit through five innings by Nick Lodolo, the Brewers tied it against Chase Petty with two runs in the sixth and Brice Turang’s solo homer, his 12th, in the seventh.

Sal Frelick singled with one out in the eighth off Sam Moll (1-6) and advanced on a sacrifice. Tejay Antone relieved and Ortiz sent a 1-1 pitch 412 feet to center for his second homer.

Aaron Ashby (11-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for his major league-leading 11th victory, and Trevor Megill finished with a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 13 opportunities.

Elly De La Cruz, activated off the injured list June 23 after almost three weeks with a strained right hamstring, put the Reds in front 3-0 in the fifth with his 13th homer, a two-run shot off Robert Gasser in his sixth game since returning.

Edwin Arroyo singled with one out and De La Cruz followed with his first homer since May 23, sending the first pitch 412 feet to left-center.

The Brewers scored twice in the sixth off Petty, who relieved to start the inning. Andrew Vaughn doubled with one out and Christian Yelich walked. Jake Bauers followed with a pinch-hit RBI single, sending Yelich to third. Yelich scored on a wild pitch.

Reds centerfielder Dane Myers was removed from the field on a cart in the fourth inning after crashing into the outfield wall on a running backhanded grab on Vaughn’s leadoff drive.

Myers’ RBI double in the first staked the Reds to a 1-0 lead.

RHP Brandon Sproat (2-4, 5.43) starts for the Brewers Tuesday, while RHP Rhett Lowder (3-5, 4.81) starts for the Reds.
