China urges the U.S. to immediately stop its blockade of Cuba and the coercive pressure it has imposed on the country, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Monday, in commenting on the recent remarks by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on the escalated U.S. unilateral sanctions on Cuba.

Diaz-Canel has recently warned that the impact of the U.S. blockade against Cuba has reached "extreme levels," and constitutes threat of "genocide," calling for a special session of the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

"The United States has imposed a comprehensive blockade and illegal sanctions on Cuba for more than 60 years, bringing severe disasters to the Cuban people. Recently, the U.S. side further escalated its blockade and sanction measures, seriously undermining Cuba's basic livelihood and drawing close attention from the international community," said Mao Ning, the spokeswoman, at a press conference in Beijing.

"China consistently opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law, urges the U.S. to immediately stop its blockade of Cuba and coercive pressure on the country, and to cease violating the Cuban people's rights to survival and development. China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding national sovereignty, opposes external interference, and stands ready to work with the rest of the international community to uphold international fairness and justice," Mao said.
