Red tide sighted

A red tide has been sighted over the past week, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (July 17).

The red tide was spotted by the public on July 15 at the Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone. The red tide still persists. No associated death of fish has been reported.

A spokesman for the working group said, "The red tide was formed by Scrippsiella acuminata, which is commonly found in Hong Kong waters and non-toxic."

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) urged mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai, Yim Tin Tsai (East), Yung Shue Au and Lo Fu Wat fish culture zones to monitor the situation closely and increase aeration where necessary.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue to monitor red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.

Sport For All Day 2026 free leisure activities

Sport For All Day (SFAD) 2026 will be held on August 2 (Sunday). On that day (from 2pm to 6pm), the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will launch a series of free leisure programmes at designated sports centres across the 18 districts. Members of the public may obtain the programme coupons at the LCSD District Leisure Services Offices or designated venues from 8.30am on July 20 (Monday). Walk-ins may also join the programmes on the spot. This year's theme is "Asian Games in Motion, City in Action", cheering for the Hong Kong athletes participating in the 20th Asian Games.

On August 2, the Kowloon Park Sports Centre will be the prime venue with activities inspired by relevant Asian Games sports items like wushu performances; virtual football, equestrian and rowing; and handball and skateboarding fun activities. New sports - floorball play-in will also be introduced. The LCSD has also specially choreographed a new fitness exercise to the SFAD theme song, bringing the fun of sports to the public. Other designated sports centres in various districts will present illustrations and fun activities related to Asian Games sports items. Fitness corners and activities for persons of different ages and disabilities will be provided.

In addition, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China will hold the "69th Festival of Sport - Sport for All Experience Day" on the same day (from noon to 7pm) at DPARK, Tsuen Wan, at which the LCSD will set up an SFAD activity booth.

As announced earlier, the LCSD will open leisure facilities for free public use for two consecutive days on August 1 and 2. Members of the public may make ballot applications via the SmartPLAY system as individual users for the free sessions from July 16 to 20. A number of supporting organisations will also open their facilities or roll out leisure programmes for the public free of charge on August 1 and 2.
