Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's steadfast support for the United Nations when meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Shanghai on Friday.

Guterres arrived in Shanghai on Thursday to attend the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, and delivered a speech on the event's opening ceremony on Friday morning.

"It is a great pleasure to meet you again, Secretary-General Guterres. During your 10-year tenure, you have led the United Nations in resolutely upholding multilateralism, actively addressing global challenges such as climate change, promoting global governance in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, and launching the UN reform process. China highly commends this," said Xi.

"China is a steadfast supporter of the UN. I put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, and proposed the four major global initiatives. One of the key considerations for these is to uphold the status and authority of the UN. China will, as always, deepen its cooperation with the UN, promote world peace and development, and advance the building of a community with a shared future for humanity," Xi added.

For his part, Guterres spoke highly of China's contribution to the UN and the world under Xi's leadership.

"Mr. President, I'm deeply grateful of you, Mr. President, and of China to support multilateralism, and to support the UN. I always saw in you a champion of some of the most important causes that we are fighting for, a champion in the fight against inequality, against an unjust, unfair global economic and financial system, a champion in protecting the planet and a champion in the governance of AI for good and for all. [We] know that we can count on you on the most difficult circumstances," said the UN chief.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday urged efforts to carry out search and rescue operations in a scientific manner after a landslide struck a county in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, leaving people trapped and missing.

The landslide occurred at 9:08 Friday in Hanjia Sub-district along a section of the Wujiang River in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, burying several residential buildings at the foot of the mountain. Ten people had been rescued as of 14:00, according to local authorities.

In his instructions, Xi stressed the need for scientific search and rescue operations to prevent secondary disasters, and called for proper medical treatment for the injured and appropriate arrangements for the aftermath. He also urged relevant departments to identify the cause of the disaster, draw lessons from this case and conduct thorough inspections to eliminate geological hazards. Xi emphasized that all regions and relevant departments must further fulfill their safety responsibilities, strengthen monitoring, early warning and risk inspection systems, and ensure that all work is carried out in a concrete and meticulous manner, so as to effectively protect the lives and property of the people.

The Ministry of Natural Resources on Friday raised its geological disaster emergency response to Level II from Level III and dispatched a working team to the site.

A four-tier emergency response system is in place for geological disasters, with Level I being the most severe.
