The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) should play a more prominent role in global governance and provide countries of the Global South with a platform to press for reforms to international financial institutions, former Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Tamara Duisenova said.

Duisenova, now director of the Academy of Political Management of Kazakhstan, made the remarks in a recent interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) aired on Thursday.

"In recent years, the SCO has developed remarkably and continued to expand. It has evolved from a regional security organization into a comprehensive platform for cooperation in areas including trade and investment, digitalization, and people-to-people exchanges. As a founding member, Kazakhstan hopes the SCO will play an even more prominent role in the global governance system. For the countries of the Global South, the SCO provides a mechanism to speak up on key issues such as reforming international financial institutions and the principle of independent development. I would also add that the SCO's expansion will further enhance its influence and enable it to become an even more representative and inclusive platform for global governance," said Duisenova.

Lin was responding to a media query about a report that U.S. President Donald Trump said the leaders of the two countries will discuss AI-related topics.

"Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in China-U.S. relations. China is ready to work with the United States to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state in the field of AI," Lin said.
