Max Muncy's tiebreaking RBI lifts A's past Red Sox for their first series win since mid-June

BOSTON (AP) — Max Muncy hit a tiebreaking RBI double off the Green Monster against closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning and the Athletics rallied past the Boston Red Sox 4-3 for their first series win after losing 12 straight.

Jeff McNeil collected his 1,000th career hit with an eighth-inning single for the Athletics, who hadn’t won a series since taking two of three at their Triple-A affiliate's park in Las Vegas against Colorado in mid-June.

A's shortstop Jacob Wilson set a major league record for his position, playing his 111th consecutive errorless game, surpassing the Orioles’ Mike Bordick’s 110 that was done in 2002.

The Red Sox had won their past nine series, with the last loss coming June 29-July 1 against the Nationals.

Muncy’s double off Chapman (2-4) scored pinch runner Donovan Walton from second.

After snapping their nine-game skid on Saturday and stopping Boston’s bid for a 10th consecutive win, the Athletics tied this one 3-all on Jonah Heim’s two-out RBI double in the eighth.

Elvis Alvarado (4-3) got three outs and Hogan Harris worked the ninth for his 11th save.

Some “small ball” helped give the Red Sox a 3-2 edge, with two unearned runs against J.T. Ginn in the fifth. Eli White reached on a leadoff bunt single, broke when Jake Rogers singled through the vacated shortstop hole and scored when Nick Sogard’s safety squeeze tied it.

Ginn threw the ball past the plate, allowing the runners to advance to second and third before Wilyer Abreu’s sacrifice fly.

Ginn gave up three runs, one earned, in six innings.

Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida was back but didn't play after staying away Saturday because of illness.

Athletics: LHP Jacob Lopez (5-4, 5.64 ERA) starts the opener of a three-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Red Sox: RHP Sonny Gray (14-2, 2.78) starts the opener of a four-game series Monday at the Toronto Blue Jays.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) — Joaquin Niemann closed with a 2-under 69 Sunday for a three-shot victory in LIV Golf New York, extending his record with his ninth career victory in the last three years.

Jon Rahm shot 76 and tied for 41st, but that still was enough to clinch the season points title for the third straight time since the two-time major champion joined LIV Golf.

Niemann, who won earlier this year in South Korea, went wire-to-wire at Trump International. He finished at 16-under 268. Harold Varner III caught Niemann until the Chilean pulled away late with a birdie on the 13th and an eagle on the par-5 15th. Varner shot 70 to finish second.

“I feel like the more they push me, the better golfer I'm going to become from every experience than I experience,” Niemann said. “To be able to hit the shots that I did and make the putts that I did coming down the stretch, I put credit on myself.”

Bryson DeChambeau shot 71 and tied for 38th, 23 shots out of the lead. He cannot catch Rahm with one tournament remaining.

“It's been a great year,” Rahm said. "Again, a little sour taste in my mouth because of how badly I played this week. But it’s been something to be proud of.”

It capped a week in which LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said it has signed a term sheet with a lead investor that will allow the league to go forward without Saudi Arabia funding. O'Neil did not identify the investor or the size of the investment.

LIV Golf next plays in Indiana in two weeks.
