Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cannabis buds at airport
Hong Kong Customs yesterday (August 18) detected a drug trafficking case involving baggage concealment at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 27 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds with an estimated market value of about $6.3 million.
Two Mainland female passengers, aged 49 and 51, arrived in Hong Kong from Bangkok, Thailand, via Manila, the Philippines, yesterday. During customs clearance, Customs officers found the batch of suspected cannabis buds inside their check-in baggage. The two women were subsequently arrested.
The two arrested women have been jointly charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. The case will be brought up at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (August 20).
Customs will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis. The department also reminds members of the public to stay alert and not to participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return. They must not accept hiring or delegation from another party to carry controlled items into and out of Hong Kong. They are also reminded not to carry unknown items for other people.
Customs will continue to apply a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
Members of the public may report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account(crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).

SEE concludes visit to Shanghai and Zhejiang
The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, concluded his visit to Shanghai and Zhejiang today (August 19).
Mr Tse first visited Shanghai Tower in the Pudong New Area yesterday (August 18) morning. He was briefed on the technology adopted by the skyscraper, such as ice storage and geothermal heat pumps, which enhance its overall energy efficiency and put green building into practice.
He then visited the Superconductivity Engineering Demonstration Project display centre of the State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company, where he learned about its research and practical experiences in developing superconducting power transmission technology. The staff of the centre presented an overview of the 35 kV Superconducting Cable Demonstration Project.
On the afternoon of the same day, Mr Tse visited the Qiantan Smart Substation and the Wujiaochang Underground Substation in Yangpu District to learn more about the latest technology in power transmission and electricity grid management.
Before departing for Hong Kong today, Mr Tse, together with Hong Kong students participating in the "Green Dreams Come True: HK Electric Green Energy, Innovation, Technology and Cultural Study Tour", visited the "Two Mountains" scenic area in Anji County, Zhejiang Province. The village Yucun in that area is where President Xi Jinping, during his tenure in Zhejiang, first mentioned the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets".
Yucun's economy used to rely primarily on mining and cement plants, which severely damaged the ecological environment and made economic development increasingly difficult. Guided by the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", through ecological conservation and the promotion of rural green transition, Yucun successfully found a new path towards sustainable development. Mr Tse expressed his hope that the students will gain an understanding of the practical implementation of the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" through the site visit.
