BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A police investigation into the death of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver’s 1-year-old son has resulted in no criminal findings and the case is now considered closed, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas announced on Monday.
The closing of the case comes after the child's death on June 28 was first confirmed on Saturday in a statement from Bills GM Brandon Beane expressing condolences to Oliver.
Police say the toddler, who was a few days shy of his second birthday, was found unresponsive in the swimming pool of a home in a neighborhood community just north of Houston. The boy was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“The incident was thoroughly investigated by detectives, and their finding were no criminal findings. The case is now closed,” the police statement said.
Oliver has asked for privacy and prayers while still mourning his son, who was also named Ed.
“Obviously, very unfortunate what happened and as a teammate of him, as someone in this locker room, all we can do is love on him,” quarterback Josh Allen said following Buffalo’s 31-7 preseason win at Cleveland on Saturday.
“There’s nothing that you can say to make the situation any better except being there in whatever ways he needs,” Allen added. “I can’t imagine what he’s going through. But the way that he’s dealt with it has been unbelievable.”
The 28-year-old Oliver is entering his eighth NFL season since being selected by Buffalo in the first round of the 2019 draft out of Houston. He has been with the team since reporting for the start of training camp.
Oliver appeared with the starters in the Bills’ preseason-opening 29-14 win over Carolina, but has missed the past week of practice due to an undisclosed injury.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Dhruv Jurel's unbeaten 115 helped India to a formidable 503-9 declared against Sri Lanka on day two Monday of the second cricket test.
Sri Lanka's reply was quickly in trouble in bad light at 8-2 by stumps, behind by 495 runs.
India started the day already in a commanding position at 300-5 after Devdutt Padikkal's century.
Rishabh Pant soon became the center of attention at six down when he returned on 3 after retiring hurt on Sunday. Pant was hit on the forearm by Lahiru Kumara and showed no discomfort as he led a partnership with Jurel of 112 to lunch.
Pant reached a fifty with a pulled four in 81 balls. He was out first ball after lunch at 419-7 trying to step out and hit off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha. Pant scored 63 from 89, including two sixes and six boundaries.
Jurel, on 48, dominated the rest of the day with the look of a veteran in his 12th test. He got a fifty in 97 balls and was closing in on his second test century at 95 when rain arrived 30 minutes before tea.
The delay lasted nearly two hours. When play resumed, he knocked off the ton with a risky single to mid-off. He got a bear hug from his partner, Mohammed Siraj, and showed off his tattooed bicep.
Jurel used up 171 balls for the hundred and celebrated next ball with a six over long-on. A hooked six and two overs later, the 500 was brought up by a Prasidh Krishna boundary and captain Shubman Gill declared.
Jurel spent nearly five hours at the crease, faced 177 deliveries and hit two sixes and nine boundaries.
Asitha Fernando led Sri Lanka with 4-106.
Sri Lanka's reply started wretchedly when Krishna nicked off opener Lahiru Udara and spinner Manav Suthar pinned nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya.
Only 58 overs of play was possible for the day.
India leads the two-match series after defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first test at Galle.
