Sri Lanka reaches 83-2 at lunch on Day 4 after India enforces follow on in 2nd cricket test

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka reached lunch at 83-2 in its second innings Wednesday, still 130 behind in the second cricket test after India enforced the follow on.

Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar took three wickets each as Sri Lanka was dismissed for 290 in reply to India's first innings of 503-9 declared.

At the break, Pasindu Sooriyabandara was not out on 35 and Kamindu Mendis was unbeaten on 10.

Sri Lanka started Day 4 at 265-8 at the Sinhalese Sports Club with No. 7 batsman Sonal Dinusha closing in on a century and just 39 runs away from avoiding the follow on.

But, off spinner Saransh Jain accounted for the last two wickets as Sri Lanka gave up a 213-run first innings lead.

Dinusha raised his second century of this series in carrying on the form that fetched him 100 and 84 in the first test at Galle, where India won by 165 runs.

Lahiru Kumara, who supported Dinusha by facing 58 deliveries for his 12 runs, was out caught by Druv Jurel off Jain.

Dinusha was to last wicket to fall for 103, caught by KL Rahul off Jain. He faced 162 deliveries and hit three sixes and eight boundaries.

Fast bowler Krishna finished the innings with 3-52 while left-arm spinner Suthar took 3-85. Jain had figures 2-69.

After a quick innings change, Sri Lanka was immediately in trouble, losing its first wicket with the total at five when opener Lahiru Udara tried to hook fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and was caught at square leg.

Kamil Mishara was trapped lbw for 32 by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, ending a 58-run second-wicket stand with Sooriyabandara, who survived two dropped catches.

MIAMI (AP) — The next tropical storm that develops in the Atlantic this hurricane season will be named Dolly, but the timing is pure coincidence and has no connection to Dolly Parton’s death Tuesday.

Storm systems are named by procedures set by the World Meteorological Organization, and the lists of names are reused every six years. For the Atlantic region, the lists are alphabetical and alternate male and female names.

This season started with Tropical Storm Arthur coming ashore on the U.S. Gulf Coast in June, and Tropical Storm Bertha dumped rain in Louisiana and Texas in July. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed and quickly dissipated in the Atlantic earlier in August.

The National Hurricane Center was monitoring a weather system off Africa that may strengthen into a named tropical storm.

Conditions were somewhat favorable for the area of thunderstorms south of the Cabo Verde Islands to become a tropical depression sometime in the next week, forecasters at the Miami-based center said early Wednesday.

If it further develops, with maximum sustained winds of at least 39 mph (63 kph), the system would be named Tropical Storm Dolly.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast a below-average Atlantic hurricane season due to El Nino. It forecast eight to 14 named storms, with three to six of them reaching hurricane strength and one to three of those intensifying to major hurricanes.

The NHC and other weather agencies name storms to easily communicate warnings about them to people and to avoid confusion. The WMO says names are chosen to be short, easy to pronounce and familiar to the regions of the world where the storm names are used. It meets regularly to evaluate potential names, and some names are retired for reasons of sensitivity, particularly for deadly or destructive storms.

One name from the 2025 season was retired, Melissa, which was a Category 5 hurricane that brought devastation to the Caribbean.
