WINCHESTER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug 27, 2026--

Thirty years after inventing composite decking and creating an entirely new building products category, Trex Company [NYSE: TREX] is entering its next era of growth. As the company celebrates its 30th anniversary, Trex is expanding beyond its category-leading decking business with a vision to become the defining brand in outdoor living and double the size of its business over the next four years.

The company’s growth strategy centers on continued investment in manufacturing capacity, product innovation, strategic partnerships and digital solutions designed to make working with Trex a seamless experience for customers, contractors and consumers. Since 1996, Trex has broadened its portfolio beyond composite decking to offer a growing range of outdoor living solutions that help homeowners transform their backyards into complete destinations.

“Our founders challenged the status quo by developing a better alternative to wood,” said Adam Zambanini, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trex Company. “That entrepreneurial spirit remains at the heart of who we are today. Creating the composite decking category was just the beginning. Today, our opportunity extends far beyond the deck. We’re investing to lead the future of outdoor living with innovative, sustainable solutions that make it easier than ever for homeowners to create beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor spaces.”

Building on Three Decades of Innovation

Trex’s story began with an unexpected challenge: what to do with the growing volume of discarded plastic bags generated by a booming breadcrumb business. In the 1980s, entrepreneur and organic chemist Roger Wittenberg began experimenting with ways to transform the waste plastic film into something useful. After years of research and development, he discovered that combining the shredded film with reclaimed wood fiber created a durable material that could resist rot, splintering and insects – laying the foundation for a new category of outdoor building products.

That breakthrough innovation became the foundation for Trex Company, which was established in 1996 when Wittenberg and three other executives from Mobil’s Composite Products Division acquired the business. Over the past three decades, the company has grown from a single-product manufacturer into a global outdoor living company and the world’s leading brand of wood-alternative decking.

Today, Trex employs nearly 2,000 people, operates manufacturing facilities in Virginia, Nevada and Arkansas, and distributes products through more than 6,700 retail locations across six continents. Its portfolio extends beyond decking and railing to include fencing, deck drainage, lighting, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, furniture, lattice and other outdoor living accessories.

The same value-from-waste mindset that launched Trex continues to drive the company today. Trex composite decking is manufactured from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, and to date, the company has upcycled more than 6.4 billion pounds of recycled polyethylene plastic film into durable outdoor products – helping divert waste from landfills and waterways.

Positioned for the Next Era of Growth

Demand for high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products continues to grow as homeowners increasingly view outdoor spaces as an extension of the home. Trex sees a significant opportunity to expand beyond individual products and deliver a broader portfolio of solutions for the entire backyard.

With a strong brand reputation, deep channel relationships, established manufacturing expertise and a track record of category innovation, Trex is positioned to capture this opportunity while continuing to deliver value for homeowners, contractors, retailers and distribution partners.

“We’ve spent 30 years earning the trust of homeowners, contractors and channel partners by consistently delivering innovation and performance,” said Zambanini. “Now we’re building on that foundation with a bold vision for the future. We believe the next era of growth will come from helping consumers think beyond a deck to an entire outdoor living experience, and Trex is uniquely positioned to lead that evolution.”

Celebrating a Milestone

To commemorate its 30th anniversary, Trex will host a series of employee celebrations and recognition events honoring the people, partnerships and culture of innovation that have shaped the company’s success. The celebration will culminate later this fall when members of the executive leadership team ring the Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange, marking both a significant milestone and the beginning of Trex’s next chapter.

“For three decades, we’ve challenged conventional thinking and redefined an industry,” added Zambanini. “As proud as we are of what we’ve accomplished, we’re even more excited about what comes next. Our vision is simple: to become the brand consumers think of first when they imagine their ideal backyard.”

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Hundreds of people crowded into a church near Haiti’s capital on Sunday for the funeral of four of the 47 people killed in a recent gang attack so brutal that it shook a country that has long struggled with violence.

Mourners wiped away tears, raised their hands and cried out as coffins arrived at a church in the farming community of Kenscoff.

“We thank everyone who came in solidarity with the families that died and those who lost their loved ones,” Pastor Jean Robert Dorlus said. “God will open a space to receive them.”

Inside the church, people swayed to gospel music. Some wailed as their shoulders shook. The church was so packed that dozens had to stand outside, peering through the windows, as they honored those being laid to rest: a mother, father and their son, and a 70-year-old man whose body had been set on fire by the gang members.

“I’ve known them for a long time,” said Yvon Marleus, a Kenscoff resident who lost a cousin in the attack. “These are people who are respected in the community.”

Gangs abducted more than 50 people during the attack, although they recently released six children and seven women following an intervention by community leaders and UNICEF.

It was one of the biggest mass kidnappings in Haiti in recent years, and survivors have organized protests and blamed police for not preventing the attack.

“They didn’t act in time to stop the carnage,” Marleus alleged.

Haiti’s National Police has said that it ordered an investigation to establish the truth about the attack, and whether it was "due to complicity or negligence.”

Outside the church, civilians stood guard with automatic weapons, ready to repel any potential new gang attacks with the help of police officers stationed nearby.

Kenscoff resident Jean Calixte Juste said he and two cousins survived the attack “by luck.”

"I almost died,” he recalled. “I almost fell into a ravine running. This is the worst and most terrible night I’ve ever experienced.”

He didn’t know the four people whose funerals were held Sunday, but he said he wanted to honor their memories.

It wasn't clear when funerals of the other victims might be held.

After the church service, the crowd climbed up a steep hill and followed the hearses transporting the coffins to a nearby cemetery.

“The government killed my family!” some mourners cried out.

Marta Hurtado, a spokesperson for the U.N. Human Rights Office, said that some 150 heavily armed gang members participated in the Aug. 23 attack. She said they first killed 13 people who tried to flee and then pursued 50 more who had sought refuge inside a church.

“After forcing them out from the premises, they executed 22 of them on the church courtyard and 12 others behind the church,” she said.

Dozens of others were injured, and more than 2,600 people were left homeless.

Overall, gang violence has displaced a record of nearly 1.5 million people in recent years across Haiti, where more than 3,050 people were reported killed from January to June, according to the U.N.

Armed men control an estimated 70% of Port-au-Prince and swaths of land in Haiti’s central region and beyond, and they are also seeking to seize territory in Kenscoff.

“I’m ready to leave," said Juste, one of the residents. "Because after this, I don’t think we’re going to survive another big attack.”

Coto reported from Havana.
