Red Minibus Overturns on Kwai Chung Road, 42-Year-Old Driver Injured

A red minibus overturned on Kwai Chung Road on Friday morning (August 28), blocking two lanes and sending its 42-year-old driver to hospital.

The accident happened at about 7 am when the minibus, heading towards Tsuen Wan, suddenly lost control and hit a roadside barrier. The vehicle flipped onto its right side, and white smoke billowed from beneath.

The driver reported neck pain and grazes on his hands and feet. He was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.

A traffic accident occurred at Lek Yuen Estate in Sha Tin, in which a 74-year-old cleaner was struck and injured by a car and sent to the hospital. The car involved was a left-hand drive vehicle with a "T" trade licence.

The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims expressed concern over the two similar accidents within a week, urging relevant government departments and employers to review the equipment of cleaners. Besides the existing reflective vests and identification flags on pushcarts, the Association suggested referencing experiences from other places, such as introducing flashing safety vests.

At approximately 6:00 a.m. on January 7th, a car with a "T" trade licence was suspected of striking a 74-year-old male cleaner pushing a handcart, while making a right turn at the parking lot near Kwai Wo House on Lek Yuen Street in Sha Tin. The 32-year-old male driver reported the police. As for the injured cleaner, he was sent to the Prince of Wales Hospital by ambulance.

A 57-year-old female street cleaner was also struck by a truck while working at Yau Ma Tei last Wednesday and died after being sent to hospital.

Based on the two similar accidents that occurred within a week, the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims requested that relevant government departments and employers review the equipment of cleaners and refer to experiences from other places to enable cleaners to be more easily identified by other road users while working, thereby reducing the frequency of traffic accident occurrences.
