China's SOEs to release 6 bln valuable data records for public use

More than 6 billion high-value data records will be made available free to the public as 14 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) kicked off China's first "Data Open Month" campaign on Saturday.

The initiative, launched at the ongoing 2026 China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang City, aims to facilitate precise supply-demand matching, promote efficient data development and utilization, and unlock the full potential of data resources, according to the National Data Administration.

The 14 SOEs have pooled over 500 data sets, with a total projected release of more than 6 billion records spanning more than 10 industries, including electric power, oil and gas pipelines, logistics, automotive, and agricultural machinery. Throughout the process, trusted data spaces will provide a secure and controlled environment for data circulation and development. By integrating these spaces with AI tools, the initiative is expected to enable a host of high-value application scenarios.

"For the first time, we are introducing a 'trial-use' mechanism for over 100 data sets covering grid operations, renewable energy consumption, equipment performance, and more. This allows potential users, such as power generators and research institutes, to access and evaluate the data at zero cost, and discuss formal cooperation if they find it valuable. Research institutes can use our regional electricity consumption data for industrial activity analysis and load forecasting, while power generators can tap into regional load forecast data to optimize unit scheduling and generation plans," said Xuan Liang, deputy general manager of the Digitalization Department at China Southern Power Grid.

The scale of China's data industry reached 6.78 trillion yuan (about 1 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2025, up 15.7 percent year on year, showed figures released at the opening of the expo on Friday.

As the sweet-scented osmanthus flowers reach full bloom in Pucheng County, east China's Fujian Province -- known as "China's hometown of osmanthus" -- the region is experiencing a surge in tourism and a thriving flower-processing industry.

A thousand-year-old osmanthus tree located in Linjiang Town has become a major draw, attracting visitors from across the country.

Tourist Wu expressed delight at the experience.

"On the way to Pucheng, the plants lining both sides are all osmanthus trees -- it was such a pleasant surprise. When the wind blows, it carries a sweet fragrance, making me very much refreshed and happy," said a tourist surnamed Wu.

The blooming period is also a harvest season. In Pucheng's Xianyang Town, workers are busy collecting osmanthus flowers to produce this year's osmanthus tea.

Beyond tea, the orange osmanthus flowers are processed into various specialty products including osmanthus honey and pastries. The local industry now spans seedling cultivation, fresh flower harvesting, scented tea processing, and cultural tourism, forming an integrated supply chain that extends well beyond sightseeing.
