Chinese star Ruoning Yin wins FM Championship at TPC Boston

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Ruoning Yin won the FM Championship on Sunday at the TPC Boston for her sixth career LPGA Tour victory, outlasting Hyo Joo Kim.

Yin ran in a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-5 12th for a share of the lead with playing partner Kim. The 23-year-old Chinese player parred the next five in breezy conditions and birdied the par-5 18th for a 2-under 70 and a two-stroke victory.

“I think this one definitely boost my confidence a little bit,” Yin said. “I just want to enjoy the moment.”

Kim shot 71. She dropped back with a three-putt bogey on the par-3 16th, missing a 9-foot par try. The South Korean player — a two-time winner this season — missed a 7-foot birdie attempt on the par-3 17th.

“At the end of the day it was Ronni,” Kim said.

Sei Young Kim chipped in for birdie on the par-3 11th to take a one-stroke lead in the final group, then dropped four shots on the next three holes with a double bogey and two bogeys. She shot 73 to tie for fourth.

Yin won twice in 2023 and three times in 2024, with a span of 672 days since her last win in the 2024 Maybank Championship.

“It’s just been so long since my last win,” Yin said. “I know I work hard and also my team, my mom is here. Just everything comes together.”

Allisen Corpuz was third at 11 under after a 68. Fellow U.S. Solheim Cup player Rose Zhang (68) was another shot back with Sei Young Kim.

Top-ranked Nelly Korda tied for 50th at 1 over after a 73 in the final event before the Sept. 11-13 Solheim Cup matches in the Netherlands.

European captain Anna Nordqvist finished her final final event on the LPGA Tour in tie for 38th. She was 1 under after a 72.

“I’m not really sure how to feel,” Nordqvist said. “Nothing ever prepares you for this moment. I’m definitely going to miss it.”

TORONTO (AP) — Max Scherzer and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, Alejandro Kirk and Kazuma Okamoto homered and the Toronto Blue Jays thumped the Seattle Mariners 7-0 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

The Mariners have lost four straight.

Scherzer (2-7) struck out a season-high 10, moving him past Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry and into ninth place on the career strikeouts list.

A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Scherzer reached the mark by striking out Cal Raleigh for the second out of the seventh inning. It was the 3,535th strikeout of Scherzer’s career.

Scherzer walked one and allowed one hit in a season-high seven innings to earn his first win since his season-opening start on March 31 against Colorado. He threw 97 pitches, 67 strikes.

Spencer Miles worked the eighth and Braydon Fisher finished Toronto’s 10th shutout.

The 42-year-old Scherzer struck out the side in the first, getting Randy Arozarena, Dominic Canzone and Julio Rodríguez swinging.

Josh Naylor struck out looking in the second and went down swinging after Seattle's lone hit, Raleigh’s two-out double in the fourth.

Scherzer matched Perry by getting Cole Young swinging in the fifth.

Scherzer passed Hall of Famer Walter Johnson and moved into 10th place all-time by striking out former teammate Kyle Schwarber in a win at Philadelphia on Aug. 8.

Kirk hit a two-run homer off Mariners starter Logan Gilbert (11-8) in the first inning.

Okamoto made it 4-0 with a one-out homer in the sixth, his 28th.

Gilbert allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, snapping a streak of three straight winning starts.

Mariners: RHP George Kirby (9-10, 4.02 ERA) is expected to start at Boston on Monday against Red Sox LHP Payton Tolle (8-6, 3.09).

Blue Jays: RHP Spencer Arrighetti (7-7, 4.81 ERA) is scheduled to start at Cleveland on Tuesday against Guardians RHP Gavin Williams (12-7, 3.98).
