U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Sunday that it had conducted a "limited and precise" operation targeting minelaying forces of the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on social media X, CENTCOM said IRGC's mining forces have posed an "imminent threat" to the strait, adding that the U.S. action was aimed to "protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce."
CENTCOM also rejected an IRGC claim of the U.S. strikes as "aggression," calling that claim is "absolutely FALSE."
U.S. forces on Sunday struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, COMTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins said, marking the first known U.S. strike against Iran since late July.
The IRGC said Monday that it had launched a combined missile and drone strike on U.S. air bases in Jordan in retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli aerial attacks on Iran's Larak Island.
The Iranian military targeted "technical and maintenance infrastructure," as well as areas where "enemy fighter jets" were stationed at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq U.S. bases in Jordan, inflicting heavy damage, according to a statement on IRGC's official news outlet Sepah News.
Also, on Sunday, COMTCOM said, as the United States continues enforcing a blockade against Iran, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Delbert D. Black was operating in the Arabian Sea.
CENTCOM added it has directed 83 commercial vessels to alter their routes, disabled three vessels that did not comply, and boarded and inspected two vessels to ensure compliance with blockade requirements.
