Schlittler takes over big league ERA lead, Yanks beat Mets 2-0 to close in on postseason berth

NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Schlittler took over the major league ERA lead, combining on a three-hitter that helped the New York Yankees close in on a record 61st postseason berth with a 2-0 win over the Mets on Sunday,

Schlittler (14-6) allowed one hit over six innings, his 21st start this year allowing one run or none. The only other pitcher 25 or younger with more in the last 110 years was the Los Angeles Angels' Dean Chance with 22 in 1964, according to Major League Baseball.

Schlittler's 1.945 ERA dropped below the 1.952 of Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski. Schlitter struck out eight and walked two as the Mets went 0 for 11 against his fastball.

Ben Rice led off his his 38th home run for the Yankees and Austin Wells ended an 0-for-20 slide with a third-inning homer into the right field second deck off Christian Scott (4-5).

Aaron Judge struck out three times and is 3 for 17 since returning Tuesday from a broken rib.

The Yankees (86-63), who lead the AL wild-card race and trail Tampa Bay by four games in the AL East, took two of three in the weekend Subway Series. They were in position to clinch their ninth postseason berth in 10 seasons depending on other team's results Sunday.

Schlittler (14-6) pitched 4 2/3 hitless innings before Brett Baty doubled off the right field wall on his 73rd pitch. Schlitter finished his 94-pitch outing by taking an 111.5 mph comebacker by Bo Bichette off the back of his right hamstring that deflected to Wells. Schlittler walked off the field and went directly to the clubhouse.

The right-hander struck out Francisco Lindor twice on fastballs, including a high fastball for a swinging strikeout in the sixth. He also fanned Juan Soto on a check swing with a 98 mph fastball and the slugger stood with both hands on his hips.

Brent Headrick (76th appearance), Paul Blackburn and David Bednar (34th save in 37 chances) finished the Yankees' 14th shutout. Each team had three hits.

A day after hitting six homers, the Mets were blanked for the 14th time. They are 22-14 since the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Mets RHP Jonah Tong (2-1, 4.80 ERA) opposes Baltimore RHP Brandon Young (9-4, 3.71) Monday in Pete Alonso’s return to Queens.

Yankees RHP Will Warren (10-6, 4.05) faces RHP Dean Kremer (3-5, 5.65) in the opener of a three-game series Monday in Minnesota.

Lamine Yamal produced another double and Barcelona also got a goal from another 19-year-old product of its famed youth academy in a 4-2 win at Levante on Sunday.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Bundesliga’s biggest club needed a second-half winner from Harry Kane to beat the league's smallest side as Bayern Munich won 2-1 at promoted Elversberg.

Also, European champion Paris Saint-Germain finally earned its first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Brest.

Xavi Espart scored the opener for Barcelona with a low, bouncing shot from the edge of the area after getting set up by Raphinha five minutes in for his first goal with the senior squad.

Espart joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy as an under-10 player and made his senior team debut last season.

For Barca’s second, Raphinha dribbled around the goalkeeper and crossed for Yamal, who used one touch to smash it in from inside the 6-yard box.

Yamal then added a penalty shortly after the break for his sixth league goal of the season and his third straight brace in the Spanish league.

A poor back pass from Espart, who was playing as a left back, allowed Ivan Romero to pull one back for Levante. Then Roger Brugué scored again for Levante before Karim Adeyemi restored a two-goal advantage in stoppage time as Barcelona improved its perfect start with its sixth win in six matches across all competitions.

Also, Atletico Madrid won 3-0 at Real Sociedad with late goals from Alejandro Grimaldo, Jonathan David and Giuliano Simeone.

Lennart Karl put Bayern ahead early on before substitute Maurice Krattenmacher equalized for Elversberg in the 61st.

Kane's winner came in the 72nd as the England forward scored through traffic after Elversberg gave away possession under high pressing.

It was Kane's 99th Bundesliga goal in 97 matches.

Elversberg entered the match ahead of Bayern in the table after stunning two former champions: Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

A backheel pass from Ousmane Dembele set up a goal for Ferran Torres five minutes in for PSG.

The two-time defending Champions League winner had gone four straight domestic games without a win and again struggled as Brest created several chances.

It was Torres' fourth goal in two matches after a hat trick in a 6-1 rout of Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Erling Haaland’s hotly contested goal settled the Manchester derby.

The Norwegian struck in the 60th minute at Old Trafford to seal a 1-0 win for 10-man Manchester City over fierce rival Manchester United in the Premier League.

At first, the goal was ruled out for offside, but after VAR review the onfield decision was overturned. That sparked a roar of celebration from the away fans.

Coventry’s nightmare start to the season continued with a 5-0 home loss to Brighton.

Dan Neil scored a double and Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 in the first Old Firm derby of the season — in the Scottish league cup quarterfinals.

Celtic fans were barred from the game following a Scottish league review of the disorder that marred the Scottish Cup quarterfinal match between the teams in March.

There were no immediate reports of disorder from the latest encounter.

Napoli ended a run of three straight losses across all competitions by beating visiting Bologna 1-0.

Midfielder Stanislav Lobotka scored in the 66th.

Juventus was beaten 3-2 at Sassuolo with Vasilije Adzic, who is on loan from the Turin squad, scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.
