LegCo Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports visits Hong Kong Sports Institute

The Legislative Council Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports visited the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) today (September 18) at the invitation of the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee (HKPC) to learn about the preparation of the Hong Kong, China Delegation for the 5th Asian Para Games and offer them encouragement and support.

Accompanied by the Chief Executive of the HKSI, Mr Tony Choi; the President of the HKPC, Mrs Jenny Fung; and the Vice President and the Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the 5th Asian Para Games, Dr Jim Luk, Members met with athletes and coaches in the HKSI. They first visited the Athletic Field to learn about the athletics team's (physical impairment and intellectual impairment) preparation and the support measures. They then proceeded to the 25-metre swimming pool in the Swimming Complex to gain insight into the daily training and preparation progress of the swimming team (physical impairment).

Members also visited the Training Hall to exchange views and play friendly matches with the boccia and table tennis (physical impairment) teams. Members then visited the Fencing Hall to learn about the preparation of the wheelchair fencing team. Members were concerned about the support provided to athletes, in terms of resources such as venues and competition equipment, as well as how to identify more athletes with potential, so as to align with the objectives set out in the First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (2026-2030) to expand the scale of the sports industry, as well as increase resources allocated to sports development and the number of full-time elite athletes.

The 5th Asian Para Games will be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan from October 18 to 24, featuring 18 sports. The Hong Kong, China Delegation, comprising over 150 people in total, in which 80 athletes will participate in 10 Sports. Members praised the athletes for their training efforts, overcoming obstacles and demonstrating perseverance, and encouraged them to unleash their potentials in achieving outstanding results in the Asian Para Games.

A total of 17 members and non-members of the Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports attended the visit. The video highlight of today's visit has been uploaded to website.

Fatal traffic accident in Tai Po

Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident happened in Tai Po today (September 18) in which a woman died.

At 3.41pm, a light goods vehicle (LGV) driven by a 68-year-old man was travelling along On Tai Road southbound. When the LGV turned left to On Pong Road, it reportedly knocked down the 72-year-old female pedestrian who was crossing the road.

Sustaining serious head injury, the female pedestrian was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital in unconscious state and was certified dead at 7.10pm.

The LGV driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death. He is being detained for further enquiries.

Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North is underway.
