Carrigg's 2-run single in 7th lifts Rockies to 5-3 win, moving Mariners to verge of elimination

DENVER (AP) — Cole Carrigg hit a go-ahead two-run single during a four-run seventh inning, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 win over Seattle on Saturday night and moving the Mariners to the brink of elimination.

Seattle (72-83) is seven games behind the Chicago White Sox for the last AL wild card with seven games to play.

Colorado (57-98) must win at least six of its remaining seven games to avoid becoming the first team to lose 100 games in four straight seasons since the 1962-65 New York Mets.

Before the game, the Rockies unveiled a bronze statue of Todd Helton, three weeks after honoring Larry Walker with his own statue. Helton’s statue depicts the Hall of Fame first baseman shouting to the sky after catching a relay from shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for the last out of the 2007 NL Championship Series and what remains the Rockies' only World Series appearance.

Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer in the first, a 459-foot drive to left-center, and Randy Arozarena homered in the third for a 3-0 lead,

Colorado's Jose Quintana, who made his first start since May 24 after recovering from a strained left elbow. Quintana gave up three runs and five hits in four innings.

Colorado scored in the third with the help from throwing errors by Raleigh, the Mariners’ catcher, and right fielder Dominic Canzone.

Jake McCarthy's RBI grounder and TJ Rumfield's RBI single tied the score against Jose Ferrer (4-4), and Carrigg blooped bases-loaded single to center off Cooper Criswell.

Colorado's bullpen pitched five scoreless innings, two by Juan Mejia (4-6). Brennan Bernardino got three outs for his second save.

Mariners rookie LHP Kade Anderson (1-2, 5.33) will face the Rockies for the first time. RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (12-10, 5.49) pitches for Colorado.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kaila Charles had 16 points, matched her career high with 12 rebounds and made four steals, Tiffany Hayes scored 10 points a night before her 37th birthday, and the Golden State Valkyries concluded their regular-season home schedule by beating the Seattle Storm 70-57 on Saturday night for a sixth straight win.

Rookie Juste Jocyte and Laeticia Amihere each added 11 points off the bench for the Valkyries (31-11), who are in second place behind Minnesota. The team said Jocyte sustained a left leg injury.

The Valkyries wrapped up a 17-5 home record with another sold-out crowd of 18,064, bringing the second-season attendance total to 397,408 — with a full house for every game at Chase Center over a second straight year.

It’s the only franchise in WNBA history to sell out every home game over its first two seasons.

Seattle (8-34), finishing up one of the worst seasons in team history, lost its third in a row and sixth of seven. Rookie Flau'jae Johnson had 17 points to lead the Storm.

Golden State coach Natalie Nakase again rested her stars who are just back from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

The Valkyries again were without star Gabby Williams and top reserve Janelle Salaun, both of whom played for the French team that lost to the U.S. 97-79 in the World Cup final on Sunday in Berlin. Nakase was an assistant for the U.S.

Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini also sat out again Saturday with an illness after she played for Italy in the World Cup.

Golden State missed six of its first seven 3-point tries and wound up 9 for 26 from long range. Kayla Thornton finished the game 0 of 6, including four 3s, but grabbed six rebounds.

Storm: Visit Las Vegas on Sunday to complete a road back-to-back.

Valkyries: Visit Portland on Tuesday night.
