The United Kingdom's FTSE 100 index dropped 0.29 percent to close at 10,708.33 points. France's CAC 40 index gained 0.20 percent to finish at 8,154.91 points. Germany's DAX index rose 0.02 percent to end the session at 25,578.85 points.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for December delivery dropped 0.17 percent to settle at 4,376.40 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for December delivery rose 0.17 percent to close at 66.530 dollars per ounce.
