No matter how the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities clamor for defense budget increases, the inevitable failure of Taiwan secessionism cannot be reversed, Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday in Beijing.
In recent claims, Lai Ching-te, leader of China's Taiwan region, peddled the narrative of "safeguarding peace with military force," claiming that Taiwan's defense budget will reach 5 percent of its GDP by 2030.
Responding to the remarks at a regular press briefing, Zhu pointed out that the budget increase merely serves Lai's personal political interests at the expense of public well-being.
"The true status quo across the Taiwan Strait is that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China," she said.
"The Lai Ching-te authorities stubbornly adhere to a secessionist stance, deliberately escalate cross-Strait antagonism and confrontation, and seek Taiwan secession through military buildup and solicitation of foreign support. They are responsible for undermining cross-Strait peace and stability and disrupting the status quo. Driven by selfish political gains, Lai has repeatedly called for defense budget hikes, squandering public funds on relentless military expansion. This runs counter to mainstream public opinion in Taiwan and will only push Taiwan toward danger," Zhu said.
"We hereby make it clear to the DPP authorities that no matter how high they raise the defense budget or how many weapons they purchase, Taiwan secessionism is doomed to failure, and the irreversible trend of reunification of China cannot be stopped," the spokeswoman said.
